The tall mahogany doors of the Dallas cathedral banged wide open against the stone wall.
More than four hundred guests turned around in their pews, gasping as music died out.
A ten-year-old boy ran down the center aisle, panting hard and clutching his chest.
His bare feet slapped against the white marble floor, tracking dirt across the pristine white carpet.
Boy: Stop the wedding! She is lying about everything!
Vanessa: What is that disgusting creature doing in my ceremony?!
Julian: Vanessa, wait. Look at him, he can barely stand up.
Vanessa: I don't care! Security, get this gutter trash out of here right now!
Boy: Please, mister! Don't marry her! She paid bad people to keep me locked away in the dark!
The blonde bride gathered her silk train, storming down the altar steps with blazing eyes.
Vanessa: Silence, you filthy street urchin!
Vanessa swung her arm and struck the child across the cheek with a vicious, stinging slap.
Before anyone could move, she shoved his chest hard, knocking him flat onto the cold marble.
The boy’s head hit the stone floor with a sickening crack as the crowd gasped.
Vanessa: Get out of my sight!
Julian: Get away from him! What are you doing?!
Julian rushed down from the altar, dropping to his knees to pull the small, bruised boy into his arms.
Julian: Are you okay, son? Look at me.
The boy looked into Julian’s eyes, raising a scratched gold locket with shaking fingers.
Boy: I am your lost son! She paid to keep me hidden!
Julian took the cold gold locket, his entire body freezing as he looked at the engraved metal.
Julian: This is my family crest...
Julian looked from the locket to the boy's face, his heart pounding violently against his ribs as a five-year nightmare began to unravel.
