The Severed Lines

A Boy Crashed A Dallas Wedding Holding A Gold Locket

Julian stepped closer to Vanessa, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

Julian: What did you do to Claire's car, Vanessa?

Vanessa: Nothing! It was a rainstorm! The police ruled it an accidental hydroplane crash!

Julian: The report said the brakes suffered sudden hydraulic failure. But that car was inspected two days before.

Leo: Mom kept stomping the pedal, Dad. She kept crying that the pedal went all the way to the floor.

Julian looked down at his crying son, his heart breaking into tiny pieces.

Julian: Thomas Henderson was an auto mechanic before he became an investigator, wasn't he?

Vanessa: I don't know his resume! My father hired him ten years ago!

Richard: Julian, you are making reckless criminal accusations without a shred of proof!

Marcus: It's not without proof, Mr. Vance. My phone just rang.

Marcus held up his phone, putting the call on speaker so the entire church could hear.

Detective Ross: Mr. Sterling? Can you hear me?

Julian: I hear you, Detective Ross. You're on speaker in front of four hundred witnesses.

Detective Ross: We just arrested Thomas Henderson at the bus depot in Waco. He was trying to board a coach to El Paso with fifty thousand in cash.

Vanessa let out a small, terrified whimper, falling back against the mahogany pew.

Julian: What did he say, Detective?

Detective Ross: He cracked immediately. He signed a full confession to avoid capital murder charges. He stated Vanessa Vance paid him sixty thousand dollars to slice the hydraulic brake line on Claire Sterling’s station wagon.

Claire's elderly aunt began weeping loudly, supported by two relatives in the second row.

Vanessa: He’s lying! He’s trying to pin his own sick crimes on me to save his skin!

Detective Ross: Henderson gave us the location of his garage safe. We just found the original text messages from Vanessa Vance giving the order, along with the timestamped photos of the damaged lines.

Julian closed his eyes, a single hot tear sliding down his cheek.

Julian: Claire didn't lose control in the storm. You murdered my wife.

Vanessa: She took everything that was supposed to be mine! You were mine first in college!

Julian: I never loved you, Vanessa! Never!

Vanessa: I gave you five years of my life! I stayed by your side when you were completely broken!

Julian: You broke me on purpose so you could step over her body and wear her ring!

Leo: Dad... my shoulder hurts really bad where she shoved me down...

Julian turned his back on Vanessa, dropping to his knees to pull Leo tight against his chest.

Julian: I’ve got you, Leo. Daddy’s right here. You’re never going back to that dark room again.

Leo: Are we going home, Dad? To the house with the big oak tree?

Julian: Yes, son. We are going home right now.

The loud scream of police sirens shook the heavy stained-glass windows of the church.

Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the pristine white walls as four squad cars screeched up the driveway.
