Julian stared down at the tarnished metal in his palm, his hands shaking violently.
Vanessa: Julian, drop that dirty piece of trash right now and get back up here!
Julian: Where did you get this, son?
Leo: My mom gave it to me before the car rolled down the hill five years ago.
Vanessa: He stole it! Julian, someone looted the crash site and sold it to a pawn shop!
Julian: Nobody looted anything. This locket was hand-carved for my grandfather.
Vanessa: You're losing your mind on our wedding day! Look at our guests!
Julian: There are only two in existence. One is locked inside my estate vault.
Leo: And Mom put the other one around my neck so I would never forget you.
Vanessa: He is lying, Julian! He's a con artist coached by your rivals to ruin our merger!
Julian: Shut up, Vanessa.
Vanessa: Excuse me?! How dare you speak to me like that in front of four hundred people!
Julian pressed his thumb against the small notch on the side of the locket.
The gold cover clicked open, revealing a tiny, water-damaged picture of Claire smiling in a field of sunflowers.
Scratched inside the metal lid was a single line written in tiny, careful letters.
Julian: For our brave little Leo. Forever your Claire.
Julian's vision blurred with tears as he touched the faded handwriting.
Julian: Claire's private handwriting... only she and I ever saw this.
Leo: She told me to hide under the trees when the bad man came with the crowbar.
Vanessa: Julian, please! This is an extortion plot! Call the police to haul him away!
Julian: What is your name, son?
Leo: Leo. Leo Sterling. Mom used to call me her little bear.
A loud gasp rose from the front row where Claire’s elderly aunt sat clutching her pearls.
Julian: Only Claire called him that. She never said that name in public.
Vanessa: Anyone could guess a stupid nickname! Julian, stand up and finish our vows!
Leo: She knows my name, Dad. She came to the cellar two weeks ago.
Julian looked up from the boy, his jaw hardening into solid stone.
Julian: What cellar?
Leo: The dark room under the barn near Waco. She had that big diamond on her finger and smelled like lavender.
Vanessa: I have never set foot in a barn in my life! You little liar!
Leo: You gave Mr. Henderson a thick yellow envelope and told him to make sure I disappeared!
Julian: Thomas Henderson? The private investigator I paid millions to search for my son?
Leo: Yes! He kept me locked up and told me you threw me away because I was bad!
Julian stood up slowly, towering over the blonde woman in her pure white dress.
Vanessa: Julian, don't look at me like that! You know how unstable investigators can be!
Julian: Turn your head, Leo.
Julian gently pushed back the boy's dirty hair, exposing a tiny red mark shaped like a leaf behind his ear.
Julian: My mother had this exact birthmark. My son was born with it.
Vanessa: It's a coincidence! A sick, twisted coincidence!
Julian: You stole my child!
Julian’s hand flew out with sudden, furious force, catching Vanessa across the cheek with a sharp crack.
The blow sent the bride crashing hard onto the white marble, her tiara snapping in two as she hit the floor.
Vanessa scrambled backward on her elbows in pure terror, holding both hands up defensively.
Vanessa: Wait, please! Let me explain!
Julian: You are going straight to federal prison!
Julian grabbed her arm with an iron grip, dragging her across the marble floor as her silk gown tore along the aisle.
