Julian stared down at the tarnished locket, his hands shaking so violently the gold chain rattled against the stone.
Julian: That's impossible. My son died in the ravine crash five years ago. I buried him beside his mother.
Leo: You buried an empty box, Dad. The man in the black jacket took me out through the rear window before the fire started.
Vanessa: Julian, stop listening to this nonsense! It’s a staged setup by your competitors to sink our merger!
Julian: Shut up, Vanessa.
Vanessa: Excuse me?! You're taking the word of a homeless beggar over your bride?
Julian gently wiped blood from the boy's split lip with his silk handkerchief.
Julian: What's your name, son?
Leo: Leo. Leo Sterling. Mom called me her little bear.
Julian's breath hitched, a sharp pain stabbing straight into his chest.
Julian: Only Claire called him that. Nobody else in the world knew that name.
Vanessa: Anyone could guess a dumb nickname! Julian, stand up and finish these vows right now!
Julian: Look at his eyes, Vanessa. Look at the crescent scar over his brow.
Leo: She knows who I am, Dad. She came to the boarding house attic two weeks ago.
The entire front row of high-society Dallas guests leaned forward in utter shock.
Vanessa: That is a disgusting lie! I've never stepped foot in a slum in my life!
Leo: You wore that shiny ring on your thumb and smelled like bitter roses. You handed Mr. Henderson a thick paper envelope.
Julian: Henderson? Thomas Henderson, my lead investigator?
Leo: Yes! He said after the wedding, I was going to a farm in Mexico so I could never come back to Dallas.
Julian rose slowly to his feet, his broad frame towering over the woman he was about to marry.
Julian: Henderson told me last month that all leads were exhausted. He said the wreckage had incinerated every trace of my boy.
Vanessa: Because it did! Julian, this kid was hired by someone who wants the Sterling trust fund!
Julian: He has my grandmother's strawberry mark right behind his left ear.
Julian turned Leo slightly, revealing the dark red patch at the base of his skull.
Julian: You knew he was alive. You've known this entire time.
Vanessa: Julian, you're becoming hysterical over nothing!
Julian: Answer me! Did you pay Henderson?!
Vanessa: Of course not! Why would I ever hide a child?!
Leo: Because of the papers, Dad! She wanted the family inheritance for herself!
Leo reached into his torn jacket and pulled out a damp, crumpled sheet of legal parchment.
Leo: She dropped this on the table when she was yelling at Mr. Henderson.
Julian snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the corporate letterhead of Sterling Enterprises.
Julian: This is Claire's original will. The one Henderson claimed was destroyed in the house fire.
Vanessa: Julian, don't look at that! It's forged!
Julian: Claire left seventy percent of the primary estate directly to Leo, with full control reverting to me until his adulthood.
Vanessa: That will was nullified by the probate court three years ago!
Julian: It was only nullified because you swore under oath that my son was legally dead!
Vanessa took a step backward, her white silk dress bunching against her knees as panic flared in her eyes.
Vanessa: Julian, please... let's talk about this in the limo. The press is right outside!
Julian: I don't give a damn about the press. You stole my child!
Julian stepped forward and delivered a stinging counter-slap across Vanessa's cheek that echoed off the high rafters.
The bride shrieked, tumbling backward onto the pristine marble floor as her diamond tiara clattered across the stone.
