Handcuffs in the Foyer

A Cruel Stepmother Dropped a Baby Over the Railing, But the Maid Caught Her

Heavy tires crunched over the gravel driveway outside. Red and blue lights flashed through the tall glass windows of the grand entrance, casting eerie patterns across the high ceilings and the American flag artwork hanging in the hallway.

The heavy front doors swung open hard. Two uniformed Texas police officers marched in, their boots thudding against the marble.

Officer Davis: Police! Who called 911?

Mark: I did, Officer! Up there! My wife just tried to kill my three-year-old daughter!

Evelyn: That is a lie! Officer, my husband is having a mental breakdown! He's accusing me of crazy things!

Officer Davis: Ma'am, step down from the staircase slowly with your hands where we can see them.

Evelyn: I am the lady of this house! You cannot talk to me like that! Call my attorney immediately!

Officer Miller: Ma'am, walk down the stairs now, or we will come up and secure you.

Evelyn glared down at the officers, her chest heaving under her expensive silk blouse. Realizing she had no escape, she slowly descended the grand staircase, her high heels clicking with anger.

Evelyn: This is a misunderstanding. A stupid domestic argument. Ask the maid, she’ll tell you—

Mark: The maid is the one who saved my daughter's life while you dropped her!

Officer Davis: Do you have footage of this incident, sir?

Mark: Right here on my phone. Look at this.

Mark handed his phone to Officer Davis. The officer’s face went stern and rigid as he watched the short clip recorded by the home security system. He looked up from the screen straight at Evelyn.

Officer Davis: Turn around and place your hands behind your back.

Evelyn: What?! You can't arrest me based on a stupid glitchy clip!

Officer Davis: You are under arrest for attempted felony child endangerment and aggravated assault. You have the right to remain silent.

Metallic clicks filled the quiet foyer as Officer Miller grabbed Evelyn’s wrists, pulling them firmly behind her back and snapping the steel handcuffs into place.

Evelyn: Ow! You're hurting me! Mark, tell them to stop! You can't let them take me to jail like a common criminal!

Mark: You belong in a cell, Evelyn. I’m calling my divorce lawyer the minute you walk out that door.

Evelyn: I will sue you for every penny you have! I will take the house, the cars, the entire trust fund!

Mark: You won't get a dime. The prenup explicitly states that any criminal act against family members voids all financial alimony settlements.

Evelyn: You bastard!

Officer Miller: Let's go, ma'am. Keep moving.

The officers led the weeping, cursing woman out through the heavy double doors. The light from the police cruisers flickered against the walls one last time before the doors clicked shut, leaving the foyer in total, heavy silence.
