Mark sat at his cluttered office desk in downtown Dallas, tapping his pen against a cold mug of coffee. The morning had started like any other, but a strange heaviness lingered in his chest ever since he dropped his four-year-old son, Leo, at kindergarten.
Mark: Just checking the feed quickly before the meeting starts. Make sure he ate his snack.
He pulled up the live security camera app on his smartphone, connected directly to the classroom system he helped fund. The screen flickered to life, showing the bright, colorful room lined with wooden desks and American flag artwork on the white walls.
Mark: What is he doing near her desk?
His heart plummeted. On the small screen, the fair-skinned female teacher, Mrs. Vance, stood towering over little Leo. Her face was twisted in cold sternness as she gripped a thick wooden stick.
Mark: No... no, stop. What are you doing?
Without warning, the teacher brought the stick down sharply across Leo’s tiny, defenseless hand. The visual was clear, and even through the muted phone screen, the violence of the act hit Mark like a physical blow.
Mark: WHAT IS SHE DOING?!
Mark slammed his hand on the desk, knocking over his chair as he stood up. His voice echoed through the quiet office floor, startling his coworkers, but he was already running toward the glass exit doors.
Mark: Hang on, buddy. Daddy is coming right now.
He sprinted down the hallway, the image burned into his mind: his four-year-old boy, red-faced, weeping hysterically, clutching his bruised wrist in terror. The distance between his office and the school had never felt so painfully vast.
Mark: If she touches him again, I swear to God...
He threw his phone into the passenger seat, jammed the key into the ignition, and tore out of the parking garage, his mind racing toward a confrontation that would change everything.
