The bright Texas sun poured across the polished marble floor of the Dallas mansion, but inside, the air was cold as ice.
Ten-year-old Toby gripped the silver handles of his pediatric walker, his thin knuckles turning white with effort.
Behind him, Elena, the house maid, wiped a streak of sweat and tears from her cheek.
Elena: Take your time, Toby. Just one foot in front of the other. You can do it.
Toby: My knees feel shaky, Elena. What if I fall again?
Elena: I am right here. I won't let you hit the floor. Try once more for your dad.
Toby lifted his left sneaker, planted it down firmly, and pushed the wheels forward without stumbling.
Toby: Look dad, I can walk again!
His joyful shout echoed straight up the curved double staircase of the three-story estate.
From the archway of the formal dining hall, a tall silhouette stepped into view wearing an expensive navy cocktail dress.
Victoria froze, her champagne glass trembling in her manicured hand as her gaze locked onto the boy's moving legs.
Victoria: What on earth do you think you are doing?
Elena: Mrs. Vance, look at him! He stood up on his own! He doesn't need the wheelchair today!
Victoria did not smile, nor did she shed a single motherly tear.
Her face twisted into sheer fury as she marched across the wide foyer, her high heels clicking sharply against the stone.
Victoria: Shut your mouth, you meddling maid!
A sudden, sharp crack echoed through the foyer as Victoria's open palm struck Elena hard across the cheek.
Elena stumbled back, clutching her stinging face while Toby cried out in terror.
Toby: Stop! Don't hurt Elena! She was only helping me!
Victoria: Stay away from my stepson!
Victoria lunged forward, shoving both hands hard against Elena's chest and sending the maid crashing onto the hard floor.
From the top landing, the heavy thud of running dress shoes broke the silence as Ethan Vance rounded the railing.
His eyes darted from his crying son, to the fallen maid, and then down to a small brown bottle rolling across the tiles.
Ethan froze on the middle step, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
Ethan: What did you just do in my house?
