A dead silence fell over the mansion foyer, broken only by the quiet hum of the air conditioner.
Ethan turned slowly toward his mother, his jaw tight and his face pale.
Ethan: What did you just say, Mom?
Evelyn: When my leukemia returned six months ago, the hospital told us there was zero match in the national registry. Do you remember?
Ethan: Of course I remember. The doctors said you had less than eight weeks unless an anonymous donor appeared.
Evelyn: The donor was never anonymous to me. It was Elena.
Ethan stared at Elena, noticing for the first time the faint surgical scars peeking beneath her medical wristband.
Ethan: Elena... is that true? You went through that agonizing procedure for my mother?
Elena: She took me in when my family lost everything after my father passed. She gave me a job and treated me like a daughter.
Elena: Donating stem cells was the least I could do to keep her alive.
Victoria's face turned completely red with rage and humiliation.
Victoria: Ethan, she is lying to turn you against me!
Victoria: She probably forged those hospital records! She's after your multi-million dollar trust fund!
Evelyn: The only one after money in this house is you, Victoria!
Victoria: How dare you speak to me like that after everything I gave up to marry your son!
Ethan: Shut your mouth, Victoria! Not another word!
Ethan stood up slowly, towering over his wife with an icy intensity she had never seen before.
Ethan: While my mother was fighting for her life in intensive care, where were you?
Victoria: I told you, I had urgent charity foundation meetings in Aspen!
Ethan: Charity meetings? Is that what you call spending eighty thousand dollars at luxury ski boutiques on my corporate card?
Victoria: I represent your family brand! I have an image to maintain for our social circle!
Ethan: And Elena spent twelve days sleeping on a plastic chair in the hospital ward, holding my mother's hand while she vomited through chemotherapy.
Elena: Mr. Vance, please... don't fight because of me.
Ethan: No, Elena. This isn't about you. This has been rotting in this house for far too long.
Victoria crossed her arms, rolling her eyes with pure disgust.
Victoria: So what? She did her job as a hired maid. That doesn't give her the right to disrespect me in my own mansion!
Ethan: This isn't your mansion. This property belongs to my family trust, signed under my mother's estate.
Victoria: We are legally married, Ethan! Half of everything you own is mine by law!
Ethan: Did you really think I was in Dallas closing a corporate buyout this week?
Victoria's smug smirk faltered, her painted eyebrows pulling together in sudden suspicion.
Victoria: What are you talking about? Your executive assistant said you were at the energy summit.
Ethan: I was at the federal bank headquarters with forensic accountants and the district attorney.
Victoria's hands began to shake as she glanced toward her designer purse on the side table.
Victoria: Why... why would you go to forensic accountants?
Ethan: Because two million dollars vanished from my mother's private medical trust fund three days ago.
