The Unexpected Return Home

A Mother's Broken Heart

Mark: Hey Chloe, I managed to grab that food you wanted from the corner deli...

Mark stepped into the entryway, carrying a warm paper bag filled with hot takeout. The cheerful expression on his face instantly vanished as his eyes adjusted to the scene unfolding in the living room. His jaw went slack, and his entire body froze in place.

Mark: What... what the hell is going on here?!

Chloe: Mark! You're back early! I was just... she dropped her glass and was being difficult!

Evelyn: Mark... oh, God, Mark...

Mark: Let go of her hair! LET GO OF HER RIGHT NOW!

The paper bag slipped from Mark's hands, crashing onto the marble floor as he dropped everything. Pure rage, white-hot and overwhelming, surged through his veins. He rushed across the large room in a furious blur, his heavy footsteps echoing off the walls. Before Chloe could even attempt to fix her grip or utter another lie, Mark reached her. In one violent, impulsive motion, his palm struck across Chloe's face with a loud, echoey crack.

Chloe: AHH! Mark!

Mark: GET AWAY FROM MY MOTHER!

Chloe: Did you just hit me?! Are you crazy?! Look at what she did to me!

Mark: SHUT UP! Just shut your mouth! I saw you! I saw you holding her hair!

Chloe: She was lying to you! She's been manipulating you for months!

Mark: I saw it with my own eyes, Chloe! Don't you dare lie to me now!

Chloe stumbled backward, clutching her bright red cheek in utter shock and terror. Her eyes wide, she backed away toward the kitchen island, completely speechless for the first time since they had married. Mark ignored her completely, dropping straight to his knees on the cold marble floor next to his weeping mother. His hands were shaking violently as he wrapped his arms around Evelyn's frail, thin frame, lifting her slightly off the floor.

Mark: Mom... Mom, I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry. Are you hurt?

Evelyn: Mark... my head... she was pulling so hard...

Mark: I know, Mom. I saw it. I'm right here now. She will never lay a hand on you again.

Evelyn: I didn't want to cause trouble for you... you were working so hard...

Mark: Trouble? Mom, you are my mother! Look at you, you're shaking, you're starving!

Mark reached over, grasping the plastic containers of hot food that had fallen out of the bag. With tears streaming down his own cheeks, he pulled out a container of warm broth and a spoon, his hands trembling so much he could barely hold it steady. He brought the spoon gently to Evelyn's pale, chapped lips, his heart tearing apart inside his chest as he realized how thin she had become under his own roof.

Mark: EAT MOTHER, YOU ARE SAFE NOW!

Evelyn: Thank you, son... thank you...

Mark: Drink this, Mom. Take your time. Nobody is going to hurt you ever again in this house.

Chloe: You're choosing her over me? Over your wife?!

Mark: You stop talking right now, Chloe, before I call the police and have you arrested for elder abuse!

Chloe: You wouldn't dare! This is my house too!

Mark: We bought this house with the money from her life insurance payout and the sale of her estate! Not yours!

Evelyn: Mark, please... don't fight... I can just go to a home...

Mark: You are not going anywhere, Mom. You stay right here. Chloe is the one who is leaving.
