FABLE

A Mother's Broken Heart

The bright fluorescent lights of the suburban Texas living room cast a cold, harsh glare on the clean marble floor. Eighty-two-year-old Evelyn sat curled near the sofa, her hands trembling as she clutched her frail knees. She was gasping for breath, her pale skin translucent under the sharp overhead lighting. Tears tracked through the deep lines of her weathered face, reflecting years of silent suffering.

Chloe: Stop whining, old woman! You think you deserve a free ride in this house?

Evelyn: Please, Chloe... I just... I just asked for a glass of water and my medicine.

Chloe: You don't get to ask for anything! You're a burden, a useless mouth to feed!

Chloe stood over her, her young face twisted in absolute fury. Without a second thought, she reached down, her fingers locking tightly into Evelyn's thin, white hair. She yanked back hard, pulling the old woman's head back as Evelyn let out a high, ragged cry of agony. The pain shot through her fragile spine, making her gasp for air.

Evelyn: Ah! Please, Chloe, you're hurting me! Please let go!

Chloe: YOU GET NOTHING TO EAT TODAY! Do you hear me? Not a single bite!

Evelyn: I haven't eaten since yesterday morning... please...

Chloe: Then you should have thought about that before existing! You sit there and shut up, or I'll throw you out on the street myself!

Evelyn sobbed uncontrollably, her frail shoulders shaking as the physical pain mixed with the crushing humiliation of being treated like an animal in her own family's home. She had given up her life savings, her private home, and every bit of her financial independence to help her son pay off his mountain of debt. Now, she was treated worse than garbage, trapped in a nightmare with no escape. Suddenly, the heavy oak front door flew open with a sharp, echoing slam that rattled the framed American flag artwork on the clean wall.
