Six months later, the high-rise office of Vance Enterprises was flooded with morning sunlight. Richard sat behind his large mahogany desk, reviewing final legal documents with his corporate attorney.
Lawyer: The divorce is fully finalized, Richard. Because of the felony conviction for attempted child endangerment, the judge threw out every single financial claim Margarethe's legal team submitted.
Richard: Does she get anything from the estate or the life insurance policies?
Lawyer: Zero. Not a single dollar. She was sentenced to eight years at the state correctional facility last week. Her appeals were denied.
Richard: Good. Make sure her legal team is blocked from contacting my office again.
Lawyer: Already taken care of. What about the restructuring of your personal will?
Richard: Everything goes into an irrevocable trust for Clara, managed by an independent board until she turns twenty-five.
Lawyer: Smart move. And the secondary clause regarding domestic staff protection?
Richard: Maria’s housing stipend and her children’s educational trust are fully locked in. Nobody can touch those funds, even if something happens to me.
The office door opened quietly, and Maria walked in carrying Clara, who was now walking on her own small feet, holding a little drawing pad.
Maria: Good morning, Mr. Vance! Clara wanted to bring you her new drawing before we head to the park.
Clara: Look Papa! I drew house!
Richard smiled, walking around his desk and kneeling down to take the colorful drawing from his daughter's hands.
Richard: Wow, Clara! This is beautiful! Is this our house?
Clara: Yes! Papa, Clara, and Maria!
Richard looked up at Maria, who offered a warm, quiet smile. The chaos that had once threatened to tear his home apart was completely gone, replaced by peace and trust.
Richard: You know, Maria, you don't have to keep calling me Mr. Vance when we're outside the workplace.
Maria: Old habits are hard to break, sir. But I appreciate it.
Richard: Thank you for everything you've done for us. You brought safety back into this house.
Maria: We're a team now, Richard. Clara deserves the absolute best, and I'm always going to make sure she has it.
Richard stood up, holding his daughter's hand as they walked toward the large window looking out over the city. For the first time in years, the future looked clear, safe, and filled with hope.
