Evelyn tried to pull her wrist free, but Carter's grip was iron.
Evelyn: Let go of me! You're hurting me!
Carter: Take off the ring, Evelyn.
Evelyn: No! You gave this to me! It is legally a gift!
Carter: An engagement ring is a conditional gift under New York state law. The marriage is canceled, which means the ring returns to the owner.
Evelyn: I won't give it back! I'll swallow it before I let that maid touch it!
Carter: Sarah will never touch that ring. It's going directly into the hands of the district attorney as evidence in your grand larceny indictment.
The front gates outside the estate suddenly buzzed, followed by the deep rumble of approaching patrol cars.
Evelyn: Who did you call?! Carter, what did you do?!
Carter: I called the precinct forty-five minutes ago, right after I reviewed the hallway footage.
Evelyn: You set me up! You dragged me here just to humiliate me!
Carter: You humiliated yourself the second you slipped that velvet box into Sarah's tote bag.
Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand stained-glass windows above the entrance. Two uniformed officers stepped through the doorway, badges glinting under the lights.
Officer Martinez: Mr. Vance? We received your emergency dispatch regarding the grand theft report.
Carter: Thank you for coming, Officer Martinez. The suspect is right here.
Evelyn: Officers, don't listen to him! He's using his billionaire status to frame me! I am the victim here!
Officer Martinez: Miss Evelyn Cross? We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding grand larceny and filing a false police report.
Evelyn: False report? I haven't even filed one yet!
Officer Martinez: Your phone called 911 dispatch twenty minutes ago claiming a burglary was in progress. We matched the cellular records to your device.
Evelyn stepped backward, shaking her head frantically as the second officer unclipped a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
Officer Martinez: Please turn around and place your hands behind your back.
Evelyn: Carter, don't do this to me! Tell them it was a prank! I'll leave the country! I'll never come back to New York!
Carter: The only place you're traveling to is the county holding cell.
The metal cuffs clicked shut around Evelyn's wrists with a harsh snap.
Evelyn: Sarah, please! Tell your brother to stop this! You know what it feels like to have nothing! Have some mercy on me!
Sarah stood tall, wiping the remaining tears from her cheeks. Her voice was steady, calm, and completely devoid of fear.
Sarah: When you threw me against that wall ten minutes ago, did you have mercy on me?
Evelyn: You little bitch—
Officer Martinez: That's enough, Miss Cross. Let's move.
The officers firmly guided the screaming bride out through the heavy double doors into the chilly evening air. Her high heels scraped loudly against the stone steps until the cruiser door slammed shut.
Carter: It's finally over, Sarah.
The grand foyer fell into complete, peaceful silence.
