Caught Red-Handed at the Bedside Table

Nurse Brenda swung the heavy metal rod through the air, its glowing tip sizzling against the sterile hospital room light. The metallic heat hummed like a angry hornets' nest in the quiet ward. Brenda’s face was twisted in a cold, merciless grin as she narrowed her eyes at the terrified woman huddled on the exam table.

Brenda: "You think you're so special, don't you, Clara? You think this baby is going to save you?"

Clara: "Please! Don't do this! Think about the child!"

Clara clutched her swollen pregnant belly, her gray silk dress rumpled and damp with cold sweat. Her heels dug frantically into the thin mattress of the hospital bed as she backed away, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

Brenda: "Nobody is coming to help you tonight. This little accident will be over before the night shift ends."

Clara: "You're insane! Dr. Evans will know! The whole board will know!"

Brenda: "Dr. Evans isn't here to protect you now."

The heavy double doors of Room 4 slammed open with a violent crash that echoed down the quiet corridor. Dr. Marcus Evans stood in the doorway, his tie loosened, his dark tailored suit wrinkled from running, and his face pale with absolute fury.

Dr. Evans: "STOP! GET AWAY FROM HER!"

Brenda jumped, her hands shaking so violently that the heavy heated iron rod dropped from her grip. It hit the linoleum floor with a sharp, echoing clatter, scorching the bright tile and sending a wisp of acrid smoke into the room. Clara gasped, collapsing sideways against the metal guardrail as her body gave out from sheer panic.

Clara: "HELP ME! Marcus, please!"

Dr. Evans: "Clara! Stay still, don't move!"

Dr. Evans rushed past the frozen nurse, kneeling beside the low examination bed where a small bassinet stood. A tiny, newborn baby was cooing softly under the crisp white blanket, blissfully unaware of the horror that had almost unfolded moments earlier. Marcus checked the infant’s pulse with trembling fingers, letting out a ragged breath of relief when he felt the strong, steady rhythm.

Dr. Evans: "He's safe. He's okay, Clara. You're both safe."

Brenda: "Marcus... wait! It’s not what it looks like! She was threatening to ruin the family estate! She was going to take everything from your mother!"

Dr. Evans slowly stood up, turning his glare toward Brenda with an intensity that made the older nurse take a step back. He slowly raised his arm, pointing directly at the small dark dome mounted in the corner of the ceiling tile.

Dr. Evans: "EVERY SECOND WAS CAUGHT ON CCTV! CALL 911 RIGHT NOW! SEND POLICE TO ROOM 4!"

Brenda: "No! You can't involve the police! Think of the hospital's reputation! Think of the lawsuit!"

Dr. Evans: "The only thing I'm thinking about is putting you behind bars for the rest of your natural life."

Two heavily armed hospital security guards, followed immediately by two uniformed city police officers, burst into the room. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed off the white walls, a sound so final that Brenda's face drained of all color as her dark plan collapsed completely around her.
