The Paper Trail

Caught Red-Handed at the Bedside Table

Eleanor: "Give me that phone, Marcus! Give it to me right now!"

Dr. Evans: "Stay back! Don't come any closer to me!"

Eleanor: "You fool! If I go down, the hospital goes down with me! The board will strip you of your medical license!"

Dr. Evans: "I don't care about my license if it means protecting my family from a monster like you."

Eleanor: "You think Clara loves you? She knew about that trust fund months ago! She used you!"

Dr. Evans: "Clara brought me the truth when everyone else in this family lied to my face."

Marcus turned on his heel and walked toward the grand study at the back of the ground floor. Eleanor rushed behind him, her expensive heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floor as she tried to grab his arm.

Eleanor: "Marcus, stop! The estate safe is private property! You have no legal right to look in there!"

Dr. Evans: "As the sole executor of Dad's actual estate, I have every right in the world."

Marcus stepped up to the heavy steel wall safe hidden behind a framed oil painting of his late father. He quickly dialed the combination—his father's birthdate—which Eleanor had never bothered to change over the last decade. The heavy lock clicked open with a soft, mechanical thud.

Eleanor: "Don't open that! Marcus, please, I am begging you as your mother!"

Dr. Evans: "You lost the right to beg for anything the moment Brenda picked up that iron rod in Room 4."

Inside the dark steel interior of the safe sat stacks of blue-bound legal files, offshore bank account ledgers, and original land deeds. Marcus pulled out a thick binder labeled with the symbol of the family holding company. Beneath it lay the authentic, notarized last will and testament of his father, complete with state seals that had never seen a courtroom.

Dr. Evans: "Here it is. The real will. Signed three weeks before he passed away."

Eleanor: "That document is invalid! It was never registered!"

Dr. Evans: "It was never registered because you hid it in a safe for ten years while you spent millions of dollars that belonged to Dad's heirs!"

Eleanor: "I gave you a life of luxury! I paid for your medical school! I bought you your first private clinic!"

Dr. Evans: "You bought my silence with stolen money! And tonight, the refund comes due."

Headlights suddenly flashed through the tall glass windows of the grand study. Red and blue light began to pulse rhythmically across the mahogany walls as two police cruisers pulled up the long driveway, their sirens echoing across the quiet suburban estate.
