Arthur: "What did you just say?"
Victoria: "It’s true! I caught her trying to sneak upstairs, and when I confronted her, she threw Chloe over the edge! She’s insane, Arthur!"
Maria scrambled to her feet, still holding the crying newborn securely against her collarbone. Her knees were bleeding, staining her black maid's uniform, but she barely felt it.
Maria: "Mr. Vance, that’s not true! I swear on my life! I was scrubbing the floors when I saw Mrs. Vance holding the baby over the railing. She dropped her!"
Victoria: "Liar! She's lying to protect herself!"
Arthur stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Maria with pure rage. His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
Arthur: "Don't you dare lie to me! 🇺🇸"
Maria: "I'm not lying, sir! Look at my knees, look at how I caught her! I saved your daughter's life!"
Victoria: "She's trying to cover up her own negligence, Arthur! Throw her out!"
Arthur raised a finger, pointing aggressively toward the open front door. His voice boomed across the marble foyer, echoing off the grand curved staircase.
Arthur: "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW! 🇺🇸 CALL 911! CALL CALL 911 NOW! 🇺🇸"
Maria: "Mr. Vance, please listen to me! Please!"
Arthur: "Hand me my daughter right now, Maria. Hand her over before I lose control."
Trembling, Maria carefully transferred the infant into Arthur’s arms. The moment Arthur took the baby, he pointed toward the door again, his chest heaving with fury.
Arthur: "Get off my property! If I see your face near my family again, you will rot in prison!"
Maria: "You are making a terrible mistake, Mr. Vance. God knows the truth."
Victoria: "Get out, you crazy woman!"
Maria lowered her head, wiping tears from her eyes as she walked out into the heat of the Texas afternoon. The massive heavy doors slammed shut behind her, locking her out. She had no money, bruised knees, and a ruined reputation, but as she looked back at the grand mansion, she knew she had saved an innocent life. But why had Victoria done it? What was she hiding?
