A senior nurse with dark curls and a kindly face entered the room, pushing a small medical cart. Her nametag read 'Sarah'. She glanced around at the tense faces in the room, her eyebrows knitting together in immediate concern.
Nurse Sarah: Is everything alright in here? I heard raised voices down the hallway.
Mark: We need an official witness for a legal paternity swab kit. My mother brought the court-stamped collection envelopes.
Nurse Sarah: Sir, our hospital policy requires that all court-admissible DNA samples be drawn directly by our certified staff using our secured chain-of-custody supplies.
Evelyn: I am a board donor at this medical center, Nurse. My attorney pre-authorized this specific kit with your administration!
Nurse Sarah: Ma'am, I don't care if you own the building. Standard protocol protects the infant. I will fetch our hospital's official sealed collection kit from the lab locker.
Evelyn: That is entirely unnecessary! This kit is sealed and certified!
Clara: Let her use the hospital's kit, Evelyn! What are you so afraid of?
Evelyn: I am not afraid of anything! I just want this nightmare over with without unnecessary delays!
Mark: Mom, let the nurse bring the hospital kit. It avoids any legal loopholes during the divorce hearing.
Evelyn: Fine! But I am staying in this room to watch every single second of the procedure!
Nurse Sarah gave Evelyn a lingering, suspicious look before exiting the room. The moment the door clicked shut, Evelyn paced back and forth near the window, clutching her leather handbag tightly against her ribs. Her knuckles were white, and a light coat of sweat glistened on her forehead despite the heavy air conditioning.
Mark: Clara, if the test proves what I think it will, you will sign the voluntary surrender of marital property by tomorrow evening.
Clara: I won't sign away my life's savings or my home, Mark. You are making the biggest mistake of your life.
Mark: The trust fund balance dropped from three hundred thousand dollars to eighty thousand in six months. Explain that!
Clara: I never had access to the master wire transfers! Check the routing numbers!
Mark: I tried! The bank said the account administrator authorized online transfers directly from the registered primary device!
Evelyn: Mark, don't waste your breath arguing with her. She's trying to distract you until her lawyer arrives!
Lily: Mommy, my tummy hurts... Why is Grandma mad at us?
Clara: It's okay, baby. Grandma is just... worried. Sit right here with Mommy.
Nurse Sarah returned carrying a red, tamper-evident plastic box. She laid out the sterile cotton swabs on a stainless steel tray next to the newborn's bassinet. The newborn snuggled deeper into his blanket, blinking his soft blue eyes at the bright overhead lights.
Nurse Sarah: Alright, I will take the cheek swab from the infant first, then one from the father, and one from the mother to complete the family trio standard.
Evelyn: Make sure you label the infant's vial clearly. I want no mix-ups in the system.
Nurse Sarah: Every vial has a unique barcode scanned directly into the state database, ma'am. There is zero chance of a mix-up.
Nurse Sarah gently rolled the swab inside the baby's tiny cheek. The baby made a small whimpering sound, and Lily immediately reached over to pat his legs softly.
Lily: It's okay, little baby. Sissy is right here.
Nurse Sarah: You're a wonderful big sister, darling. Now, sir, please step up for your sample.
Mark stepped forward, his mouth set in a grim line. He allowed the nurse to swab his inner cheek without saying a word. Once the sample was dropped into the solution tube, Nurse Sarah turned to me and completed my swab. She sealed the red box with a heavy plastic padlocks-style tie and scanned the barcodes using her handheld computer.
Nurse Sarah: Done. Results from the expedited lab in downtown Dallas will be delivered electronically and by courier within twenty-four hours.
Evelyn: Good. Mark, come with me to the coffee shop downstairs. We need to review the property division paperwork with our attorney before tomorrow morning.
Mark: I'm coming, Mom. Clara, I'll be back at eight tonight to collect Lily for her stay at my mother's house.
Clara: You are not taking my daughter anywhere without a judge's order, Mark!
Mark: We'll see what the judge says when he sees the bank records and the DNA paperwork!
Mark turned on his heel and walked out, following his mother into the corridor. But as Evelyn swung her designer purse over her shoulder, a small white slip of paper fell out of her side pocket, fluttering quietly onto the carpet beneath the hospital sofa.
