By eight o'clock that evening, the sky outside the window had turned a deep, dark blue. The room was quiet, except for the soft breathing of my newborn baby sleeping peacefully in his bassinet. Lily was fast asleep on the small visitor sofa, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket. I sat upright in bed, clutching the photocopied receipt inside my hospital folder, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.
The door pushed open sharply. Mark stepped inside, carrying a small overnight bag for Lily. He looked exhausted, deep dark circles ringing his eyes, but his expression remained hard and distant.
Mark: Wake Lily up, Clara. My mother is waiting in the car downstairs. She's taking Lily to her house for the week.
Clara: Lily isn't going anywhere with your mother, Mark. And neither are you.
Mark: Don't start this again. We discussed this. Until the paternity results come back tomorrow, I am taking custody of our daughter to ensure she stays in a stable environment.
Clara: Stable? You think your mother's house is a stable environment?
Mark: My mother is a respected woman in this city! She built our family business from the ground up after my dad died! Stop insulting her because you got caught!
Clara: Look at this, Mark.
I pulled the white slip of paper out of the folder and held it out to him across the bed.
Mark: What is this? Another invoice from your divorce attorney?
Clara: Read it. Read the name on the remitter line. Read the amount. Read the destination account!
Mark snatched the paper out of my hand with an annoyed huff. He squinted at the text under the bright fluorescent light. As his eyes tracked across the lines, the color slowly drained from his face. His lips parted, but no sound came out for several long seconds.
Mark: This... This is a wire receipt... Two hundred and twenty thousand dollars...
Clara: From our joint trust fund. Signed by Evelyn Vance. Transferred directly into Vance Luxury Holdings in the Cayman Islands three weeks ago!
Mark: No... This can't be right. Mom said... She said you stole that money! She showed me the online account summary!
Clara: She showed you a edited summary, Mark! She used her administrator access to move the funds, framed me for the theft, and then tried to trick you into divorcing me so she could take total control of our business and our home!
Mark: This... This must be a mistake... Maybe she moved it to a secure investment account for us...
Clara: An offshore account in the Cayman Islands under her sole name? Open your eyes, Mark! She dropped that receipt right here on the carpet when she left this afternoon!
Mark: She... She lied to me?
Clara: She didn't just lie to you, Mark. She brought her own private DNA swab kit today! Why do you think she fought so hard against Nurse Sarah using the hospital's official sealed kit?
Mark: She... She wanted to swap the swabs...
Clara: She wanted to make sure the test came back negative so you would abandon me and your newborn son forever!
Mark stumbled backward, collapsing into the vinyl armchair. He stared at the piece of paper in his shaking hands, his entire world crumbling around him. Tears began to weld in his eyes as six years of blind trust in his mother shattered into pieces.
Mark: My god... What have I done to you? What have I done to our family?
