The door clicked shut behind them, leaving the room in a heavy, suffocating quiet. I pulled my knees up to my chest, letting the hot tears flow freely down my face. Lily climbed onto the bed, wrapping her tiny arms around my neck and resting her soft cheek against mine.
Lily: Don't cry, Mommy. I love you. Baby brother loves you too.
Clara: Oh, baby... I love you both so much. Everything is going to be okay. Mommy promises.
Lily: Look, Mommy! Grandma dropped her garbage on the floor!
Lily slid down off the bed and scampered over to the small white piece of paper near the sofa. She picked it up with her small hand and brought it back to the bed, dropping it into my lap.
Clara: Sweetie, you shouldn't touch— wait...
My eyes caught the bold black letterhead at the top of the folded paper: First National Private Wealth Management - Dallas Branch. It wasn't a piece of garbage. It was an official bank cashier's check receipt dated three weeks ago. My heart stopped as I read the numbers printed across the center line: $220,000.00.
Clara: Two hundred and twenty thousand dollars...
I scanned down to the remitter line. The name printed in clear, dark font wasn't mine. It was Evelyn Vance. The receiving account listed on the receipt belonged to an offshore real estate development firm based in the Cayman Islands, named Vance Luxury Holdings LLC.
Clara: She took it... She stole the money from our joint trust fund and transferred it to her own private offshore account!
My hands shook so violently that the paper rattled in my grip. Evelyn had been draining the family trust fund that my late father had helped build, and she was framing me for the theft to destroy my marriage and force Mark into divorcing me!
Clara: She framed me... She lied to Mark about everything!
Suddenly, the door opened, and Nurse Sarah walked back in holding a small digital camera and a tablet device.
Nurse Sarah: Clara, dear, I need to double-check the mother's wristband barcode. The lab system gave a minor flag on the hospital admission file.
Clara: Sarah! Look at this! Please, look at this receipt!
Nurse Sarah: What is it, honey? Calm down, you shouldn't stress yourself right after delivery.
Clara: My mother-in-law dropped this when she left! She accused me of stealing two hundred thousand dollars from our trust fund! But this receipt shows SHE transferred the exact amount to her own offshore account three weeks ago!
Nurse Sarah took the paper and read it carefully, her eyebrows raising in shock.
Nurse Sarah: Good lord... This is an official teller transfer record from First National. It has her signature at the bottom!
Clara: She's trying to take my children away from me! She brought her own fake DNA kit earlier to tamper with the results!
Nurse Sarah: I noticed that yellow envelope she had under her arm. When I insisted on using our hospital's sealed red box, she looked terrified. Clara, listen to me carefully. I'm going to call the hospital security director and the local police department right now.
Clara: Will they help me? Mark believes everything she says!
Nurse Sarah: Financial fraud of this scale is a major felony. Plus, attempting to falsify court-ordered paternity evidence in a hospital is a federal offense. Keep this receipt safe. I'm making a photocopy right now on our nurses' station machine.
Clara: Thank you... Thank you so much, Sarah!
Nurse Sarah: You focus on resting and holding your baby. Justice is going to catch up with that woman faster than she thinks.
