The morning light streamed through the pristine windows of the suburban home, casting a soft glow across the polished hardwood floors. Little Maya ran down the long hallway, her small hands reaching for the brass handle of the heavy wooden door at the end of the corridor.
Maya: Mommy! Mommy, open the door!
Her tiny fists banged against the solid oak, her high-pitched voice echoes through the silent house. Tears streamed down her flush cheeks as she desperately turned the knob, but it refused to budge.
Brenda: Stop it right now, Maya! Your mother is gone!
Brenda rushed around the corner, her red dress rustling as she grabbed the toddler's arm to pull her back. In her hurry, she bumped into a wooden toolbox sitting near the trim, sending a heavy steel hammer clattering onto the floor.
Maya: No! She is in there! I hear her!
With a surge of frantic toddler energy, Maya wriggled free from Brenda’s grip and lunged forward once more. She slammed her palm against the old brass latch with all her small weight. With a loud click, the heavy lock finally slipped, and the wooden door slowly swung open to reveal the dark concrete stairs leading down into the pitch-black basement.
Maya: Mommy!
Emily: Sweetheart... Mommy is right here!
A weak, shivering voice echoed up from the dark bottom of the steps. Just then, footsteps pounded down the hallway as David rushed into the corridor, dropping his briefcase in sheer horror as he saw the basement door wide open.
David: Emily?! What is going on here?!
Brenda: David, wait! Let me explain!
David: How could you do this to my family?!
David turned abruptly toward Brenda, his face pale with fury. Before she could take a step back, his hand flew across the air, landing a sharp slap against her cheek that echoed through the bright hallway. How had his wife ended up locked beneath their own home, and what dark secret was his new bride hiding behind her innocent smile?
