The Secret in the Dark

Locked Behind the Basement Door

David: Get away from that door right now, Brenda!

Brenda: David, please! You don't understand what happened!

David: I understand that my wife is locked in the dark while you stand here watching!

David pushed past Brenda, his heart hammering against his ribs as he stared down into the murky cellar. The cool, damp air lifted from the concrete steps, carrying the faint sound of soft sobbing.

David: Emily! Are you hurt? Can you walk?

Emily: David... oh God, David! Please get me out of here!

Maya: Mommy! Don't cry, Mommy!

David: Stay up here with Maya, Brenda. Don't you dare move a single muscle.

Brenda: David, it was an accident! The lock caught from the outside!

David: An accident? The heavy bolt was turned all the way! Don't lie to me!

David rushed down the steep stairs, taking two steps at a time until his dress shoes hit the cold concrete floor. In the far corner, sitting on a broken wooden chair, was Emily. Her clothes were disheveled, her skin pale, and her wrist was loosely tied to the chair leg with a thick piece of rope.

David: What in the world... Emily, who did this to you?

Emily: She did... Brenda did this to me three days ago!

David: Three days? But Brenda told me you ran away with your sister!

Emily: She lied to you! She tricked me down here and locked the door!

David untied the rough knot around her wrist, his hands shaking violently as the reality of the situation hit him. He wrapped his arm around her waist, helping her stand up on her unsteady legs.

David: Lean on me. We're going upstairs right now.

Emily: My head hurts so bad, David. She took my phone... she took everything.

David: I'm here now. Nobody is going to hurt you ever again.

As they slowly climbed the stairs, the bright daylight from the hallway began to warm their faces. Brenda was standing by the entrance, her hand still holding her red cheek, her eyes darting nervously toward the front door.

Brenda: David, you have to hear my side of the story before you do anything crazy.

David: Shut your mouth! You locked my wife in a cold cellar for three days!

Brenda: She was going to ruin everything! She was going to destroy our family estate!

Emily: You wanted the inheritance, Brenda! That's all you ever cared about!

Maya: Mommy! You came back!

Emily collapsed onto her knees on the hardwood floor, pulling little Maya into a tight, desperate embrace as tears washed clean paths through the dust on her cheeks.

Emily: I missed you so much, baby. Mommy is here, I'm right here.

David: Brenda, give me your phone right now. I'm calling the police.

Brenda: If you call the cops, you'll lose everything, David! Think about the trust fund!

David: I don't give a damn about the money! You're a monster!

Brenda backed away toward the front entryway, her heels clicking rapidly against the polished floor as her expression turned from shock to pure malice.

Brenda: You think you can just throw me out? I have signed documents, David!

David: What documents?

Brenda: The power of attorney... and the land deed to this entire property!
