The sleek white marble floors of the suburban Dallas home gleamed under the soft recessed lights, contrasting sharply with the heavy, suffocating silence hanging in the air.
Mark: What is going on here?
Mark dropped the heavy grocery bags onto the island counter, the rustle of brown paper echoing through the pristine kitchen.
Sophie: Daddy! Daddy, hungry!
His heart sank as he saw little Sophie standing near the massive refrigerator, her tiny hands tugging helplessly at a heavy brass padlock secured around the handles.
Mark: Sophie, sweetie, come here. Look at me.
He rushed over, pulling his sobbing daughter into his arms, feeling her small frame tremble against his chest.
Sophie: Daddy, hungry! Went locked!
Mark: Did you eat anything today, Sophie? Tell Daddy the truth.
Sophie: No eat... fridge locked...
Brenda: Oh, don't listen to her, Mark. She's making it up completely.
Brenda walked into the kitchen with an indifferent smirk, her polished demeanor untouched by the child's tears.
Mark: She's three years old, Brenda! Why is there a padlock on our refrigerator?
Brenda: I locked it because she keeps sneaking snacks before dinner. I'm trying to teach her discipline.
Mark: Discipline? She hasn't eaten all day!
Brenda: You're exaggerating as usual. Elena fed her lunch. Right, Elena?
The maid stood near the doorway, keeping her head down, avoiding Mark's intense gaze.
Mark: Is that true, Elena? Did she eat?
Elena: I... I was told not to interfere, sir.
Brenda: See? She's fine. Stop making a scene in front of the help.
Mark looked at Brenda, feeling a cold realization wash over him as his eyes slowly drifted up toward the corner of the ceiling.
Mark: She forgot to turn it off...
Brenda: What? What are you talking about?
Mark: The security camera overhead, Brenda. The red light is glowing. It recorded everything that happened in this kitchen today.
