Officer Miller: Good evening, sir. We received a domestic call regarding child endangerment and grand theft.
Mark: Thank you for coming quickly, Officer. I am Mark Sterling. This is my wife, Brenda.
Brenda: Officers, thank goodness you're here! My husband is having a manic episode and threatening me!
Officer Miller: Ma'am, please step back and remain calm. We need to hear from both parties.
Mark: Here is the video footage from the kitchen camera, Officer. You can clearly see her locking the child out of food access for over six hours.
Officer Miller: Let me see that phone screen, please.
The two officers leaned in, watching the clear video play back with full audio of little Sophie crying in distress.
Officer Miller: Ma'am, is this you in the video attaching a heavy padlock to the refrigerator?
Brenda: It was a parenting discipline technique! Parents lock pantries all the time!
Officer Miller: Denying basic sustenance to a three-year-old child for extended hours is child neglect under Texas law, ma'am.
Brenda: He's exaggerating! She had breakfast!
Elena: She did not have breakfast, Officer. Mrs. Brenda forbade me from serving her anything today.
Brenda: You treacherous little snake! You're lying!
Officer Miller: Ma'am, do not yell at the witness. Step away from the door.
Mark: Officer, there is also the matter of stolen property from my private safe, including original trust documents and bearer bonds.
Brenda: Those are shared marital assets! I have a right to hold them!
Mark: The trust was established prior to our marriage under my father's sole name. They are not marital property.
Officer Miller: Ma'am, do you have those documents in your personal possession right now?
Brenda: My designer bag is private property! You can't search it without a warrant!
Officer Miller: If there is reasonable suspicion of stolen property involving a active investigation, we can hold the bag for verification, ma'am.
Brenda: Get your hands off me! Mark, tell them to stop!
Mark: I told you, Brenda. Actions have real consequences in this house.
Officer Miller: Brenda Sterling, you are under arrest for felony child endangerment and suspected grand theft. Put your hands behind your back.
Brenda: You can't do this to me! I am a member of the Dallas Country Club! My lawyer will destroy you all!
Mark: Good luck with that, Brenda. You're going to need every penny you didn't manage to steal.
The metallic click of handcuffs echoed sharply through the grand foyer, replacing the sound of the locked fridge with the sound of justice.
