Claire sprinted through the main front gates of the high school, her heavy heart pounding wildly. The hallway was eerily quiet, completely stripped of the usual morning student traffic noise.
Her shoes squeaked loudly against the polished hardwood floors as she dashed past empty lockers. White crown molding lined the walls, making the bright hallway feel endless and cold.
Claire: Please let the door be unlocked... please, dear God, let me in!
She reached Room 204, grabbing the heavy brass door handle and pulling with all her force. It was locked firm, refusing to budge even an inch under her frantic hands.
Through the glass window panel, she saw her classmates sitting quietly at their individual desks. The strict proctor, Mr. Harrison, was handing out the official examination booklets down each row.
Claire banged loudly on the thick glass, her voice cracking with sheer desperation and growing panic.
Claire: Mr. Harrison! Please! I'm here! Open the door!
Mr. Harrison slowly walked over to the door, his expression stern and completely unforgiving as always. He pointed directly to his wristwatch, shaking his head slowly from side to side.
Mr. Harrison: Board regulations state no entry after eight AM. You know the rules, Claire.
Claire: Please! It was an emergency! Just two minutes late!
Mr. Harrison: Rules are rules. I cannot break them for anyone. Go to the office.
He pulled the dark window shade down completely, blocking her view of the entire test classroom. Claire stumbled backward, hitting the hallway wall as her knees buckled under intense shock.
She dragged herself down the quiet corridor toward the main administrative office in complete disbelief. Every step felt impossibly heavy, as if her entire world was collapsing around her.
She walked into an empty side classroom nearby, collapse onto a chair, and looked around in total shock. The hardwood floor and bright white trim seemed to mock her terrible failure.
Claire: This can't be happening... this isn't real...
She sat alone at a wooden desk, staring frantically down at her small ticking wristwatch again. The loud ticking noise echoed off the walls, sounding like a high-tension dramatic countdown.
Claire: 8:15 AM... it's over. It's completely over for me.
She gasped loudly, a heavy gasp of terror escaping her lungs as she stood up in total panic. The wooden chair scraped backward loudly across the floor with a harsh shriek.
She grabbed her head with both hands, tears finally bursting past her eyelids in a violent stream. Her full scholarship, her mother's trust, her university future—all gone in five short minutes.
Claire: What did I do?! How could I be so stupid?!
She stumbled out of the classroom building, completely oblivious to the soft breeze outside now. She walked blindly back toward the neighborhood park, feeling utterly hollow inside her chest.
The bright sunshine felt like an insult to her sudden, overwhelming misery and utter ruin. She reached the wooden bench where she had sat with Julian just twenty minutes prior.
Claire collapsed onto the wooden bench, weeping hysterically as uncontrollable sobs racked her frail frame. She buried her face in her trembling hands, her red hair falling loose over her face.
Claire: My whole life... ruined because I wanted to see him!
