Julian walked slowly over from the fountain area, carrying two paper cups of iced coffee in his hands. He looked surprised to see Claire sitting there crying so violently on the bench.
Julian: Claire? What are you doing back here already? Did you finish early?
Claire looked up, her red hair wildly messy and her face stained deep red with hot tears. Her eyes flared with intense anger as she glared directly into his calm face.
Claire: Finish early?! They locked me out, Julian! I missed the whole exam!
Julian: What? locked out? Come on, surely they'll let you retake it later.
Claire stood up abruptly, slapping the iced coffee cups straight out of his hands with anger. The dark liquid splashed across the concrete path, staining his clean white sneakers instantly.
Claire: There are no retakes! Do you understand plain English?! That was the final scholarship test!
Julian: Hey! Take it easy! You don't have to yell at me like that!
Claire: You promised me I wouldn't be late! You kept me sitting here talking about stupid stories!
Julian stepped back, his charming demeanor suddenly slipping away to reveal a cold, annoyed expression instead. He wiped a drop of coffee off his shirt, scoffing loudly at her outburst.
Julian: Nobody forced you to stay here, Claire. You chose to sit with me voluntarily.
Claire: You distracted me on purpose! You knew how important this morning was for me!
Julian: Don't blame me for your own poor time management skills, okay? You're an adult.
His harsh words hit her like a physical blow, cutting deeper than the actual test failure itself. The realization dawned on her that Julian did not truly care about her future at all.
To him, she was just a pleasant morning distraction, while to her, he was the ruin of her dreams. She wiped her face with the back of her wet sleeve, her body shaking violently with rage.
Claire: You don't care at all... you actually don't care that my life is ruined!
Julian: Look, it's just college. It's not the end of the world, Claire. Stop being dramatic.
Claire: Dramatic?! My mother sacrificed everything to keep our house so I could study!
Julian: Whatever. I tried to be nice, but you're just crazy. I'm leaving.
He turned his back on her without another word, walking away down the sunlit park path quickly. Claire watched him leave, feeling a mixture of intense disgust and total self-loathing inside.
She sank back down onto the park bench, her chest heaving as more tears flooded her vision. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, seeing five missed calls from her mother already.
Claire: Mom... how am I ever going to tell you what I've done today?
She pressed the phone against her forehead, feeling the cold glass against her hot, tear-stained skin. The weight of her massive mistake settled over her shoulders like a mountain of lead.
She knew she had nobody to blame but herself for choosing a handsome face over her duty. The price of her foolish romantic fantasy was her entire future, lost forever in five minutes.
