By eight o'clock that evening, an emergency locksmith had replaced every deadbolt on the suburban house's exterior doors.
Karen arrived with a thick folder of emergency court filings and sat at the dining table with Sarah.
Karen: Mark committed major financial fraud by hiding marital assets prior to any official divorce filing.
Sarah: Will these email records hold up in court?
Karen: Absolutely. In fact, his paralegal friend Brenda broke strict legal ethics by assisting him with firm resources.
Suddenly, the front door handle rattled violently from the outside, followed by heavy pounding on the wood paneling.
Mark: Sarah! Open this door right now! My key isn't working!
Sarah walked calmly toward the entry hallway, with Karen following right behind her.
She opened the small decorative window flap on the door, looking out at Mark standing under the porch light.
Sarah: Your keys don't work because the locks have been changed.
Mark: You can't lock me out of my own house! I pay the mortgage here!
Sarah: We pay the mortgage, Mark. And you don't live here anymore.
Mark: Sarah, stop acting crazy! Let me in so we can settle this like adults!
Karen stepped up beside Sarah, holding her legal credentials up to the glass window.
Karen: Mark, this is Karen. If you don't step off this porch in thirty seconds, I am calling the police for domestic disruption.
Mark stumbled back a step, recognizing his sister-in-law's voice and realizing she was already legally involved.
Mark: Karen, stay out of this! This is between me and my wife!
Karen: It became my business when you committed financial fraud against my sister using your firm's accounts.
Mark's face went completely pale under the yellow porch light as he realized his secret plan was exposed.
Mark: What... what are you talking about?
Sarah: I saw your hidden trust fund files, Mark. I know about the offshore accounts and Brenda's involvement.
A heavy silence fell over the front porch as Mark stood frozen in place, speechless.
Sarah: My lawyer will serve you with divorce papers and a court injunction freezing all your accounts by tomorrow morning.
Mark: Sarah, please! Don't do this! It will ruin my partnership at the firm!
Sarah: You should have thought about your partnership before bringing your mistress into my living room.
She closed the window flap firmly, shutting out his desperate pleas and heavy knocking.
Ten minutes later, the sound of Mark's footsteps retreated down the driveway as he finally gave up and drove away.
Sarah turned to her sister, feeling a sudden surge of strength she did not know she possessed.
Sarah: Tomorrow, we take this fight straight to his firm.
