A Father's Vow

The Boy Who Stopped His Grandfather's Dallas Wedding

Arthur turned to face the two hundred guests still sitting in stunned silence. He picked up the wedding microphone that had been set up for his vows moments earlier.

Arthur: Ladies and gentlemen... the ceremony is obviously canceled. I want to thank you all for coming, but I ask that you please leave the estate now. My family has a long road of healing ahead of us.

The crowd quietly began to filter out through the front entrance, Whispering in hushed tones about the dramatic downfall of Dallas's most talked-about couple. Within twenty minutes, the grand house was empty, save for Arthur, Leo, and the house staff.

Arthur: Leo, where is your mother?

Leo: She's standing near the front gate, Grandpa. She said she didn't want to cause a scene inside because of your guests.

Arthur: She should have been inside from the very beginning. Come on, let's go get her.

Arthur took his grandson's hand, and together they walked down the front marble steps toward the estate gates. Standing near the police cruiser was Sarah, Thomas's widow. She looked tired, pale, and worn down by eight months of silent grief, but her eyes were steady and strong.

Sarah: Arthur...

Arthur: Sarah... My God, Sarah. I am so, so sorry.

Sarah: You don't have to apologize to me, Arthur. You didn't know what they were doing.

Arthur: I should have known! I was so wrapped up in my own sorrow that I let that venomous woman drive a wedge between us! I let her make me believe you were trying to take Thomas's share of the business!

Sarah: She was very convincing. She manipulated everyone, including Thomas before he died.

Arthur: How did you find the footage, Sarah?

Sarah: Thomas was paranoid about his office garage. He had installed a motion-activated cloud camera on his dashboard two weeks before the crash because he noticed his tire pressure kept dropping. The files were encrypted on an old external server. It took me months to hire a forensic IT specialist to unlock them.

Arthur: You saved my life today, Sarah. If I had married her, she would have killed me next to get full control of the estate and the trust fund.

Sarah: I didn't do it for the money or the estate, Arthur. I did it because my son deserved to know his father didn't die because of a stupid mistake. He deserved justice.

Arthur: And he got it. Because of you and this brave little man right here.

Arthur knelt down on the gravel driveway, pulling young Leo into a tight hug. Tears finally spilled over the old man's eyes—tears of relief, grief, and profound gratitude.
