FABLE

A New Beginning

The Broken Flower Swing

The police handcuffed Evelyn, who was screaming and kicking as she was led away through the greenhouse doors, her high heels clicking loudly against the shattered glass from Eleanor's grocery bag. Richard stood frozen in the middle of the room, looking utterly defeated and ruined.

Lawyer Marcus: Richard Vance, I am serving you with an emergency restraining order and an immediate eviction notice from the Sarah Vance Estate. You have fifteen minutes to gather your personal belongings and leave the premises.

Richard: Marcus, please... Sarah was my wife...

Lawyer Marcus: And Sarah specifically wrote a clause in her will stating that if you ever allowed harm to come to Maya, all your rights to her estate, her money, and this house would be permanently terminated. You signed it, Richard.

Richard: I never thought Eleanor would actually enforce it...

Eleanor: I will enforce every single letter of Sarah’s final wishes to protect my granddaughter from people like you.

Richard: Mom... can I at least say goodbye to Maya?

Eleanor: No. You lost that privilege when you stood by and let your wife call her a brat and break her mother's swing. Now get out of my daughter's house before I have the officers escort you out in handcuffs too.

Richard looked at tiny Maya one last time, but the toddler buried her face deep into Eleanor's neck, refusing to look at him. Defeated, broke, and stripped of everything he had stolen from his late wife, Richard turned around and walked out of the estate in shame.

Lawyer Marcus: The locks are being changed right now, Eleanor. The trust is completely secure, and full legal custody papers will be signed by the judge tomorrow morning.

Eleanor: Thank you, Marcus. Thank you for protecting Sarah’s baby.

Lawyer Marcus: Sarah was a brilliant woman. She knew how to protect her daughter, even from beyond the grave.

Eleanor walked over to the broken floral swing lying on the floor. She knelt down, holding Maya with one arm while her other hand gently picked up the silk pink roses that had been severed by Evelyn’s harsh blades.

Maya: Grandmama... swing all fixed now?

Eleanor: Not yet, my beautiful sweet angel. But tomorrow, Grandmama is going to hire the best carpenters in the city, and we are going to rebuild your mother's rose swing bigger, stronger, and more beautiful than ever before.

Maya: Mommy's roses?

Eleanor: Yes, baby. Mommy's roses will always bloom here, and nobody will ever try to cut them down again.

Maya smiled softly, wrapping her small arms around Eleanor’s neck as the bright sunlight filled the peaceful greenhouse once more, free from the dark shadows of greed and cruelty that had almost ruined their lives forever.
