The pristine marble foyer of the Sterling estate in Dallas was usually silent as a tomb, but on that humid Tuesday afternoon, the sound of glass shattering shattered the quiet. Margarethe Sterling stood at the top of the grand staircase, her champagne silk dress catching the light of the crystal chandelier as her face twisted in rage.
Margarethe: You absolute trash! I know what you did!
Sarah stood near the front door, clutching her worn leather purse tightly against her chest. Her uniform was spotless, but her hands were trembling violently.
Sarah: Mrs. Sterling, please, I don't understand what you're talking about.
Margarethe: Don't play dumb with me! My five-hundred-thousand-dollar diamond necklace is missing from the master safe, and you are the only one who had access to that wing this morning!
Sarah: I only cleaned the guest quarters today! I swear on my life, I never went near the master safe!
Margarethe stormed down the stairs, her expensive heels clicking furiously against the white Italian marble. She marched straight up to Sarah, her eyes burning with hatred.
Margarethe: You expect me to believe a penniless maid wouldn't steal a fortune given the chance? Open your bag right now!
Sarah: I have nothing to hide, but you have no right to touch my personal belongings!
Margarethe: I have every right in my own house!
Margarethe lunged forward, grabbing Sarah by the shoulders of her black-and-white uniform. With a sudden, vicious push, she threw Sarah to the ground. Sarah fell hard onto the unyielding marble, her purse spilling open as a choked cry escaped her throat. Before she could recover, a heavy shadow fell across the foyer, and the massive double doors swung wide open.
