The letter was dated from that very morning, written just hours before David had arrived home with his clipboard. David held the paper with trembling fingers as he read the words Sarah had penned in private.
"David, if you are reading this, it means I failed to fix everything before you found out. My sister Eleanor was in desperate trouble before she passed away. She left behind massive medical bills and legal debts that threatened to ruin her baby's future. I couldn't let her child be sent into the state system or left with nothing."
David paused, his heart hammering in his chest. He looked toward the bedroom where the newborn was sleeping peacefully in the crib. The reality of the situation hit him like a sudden physical blow.
David: The baby... this isn't our biological child. This is Eleanor's baby.
He continued reading the letter hastily, his eyes scanning down the page through a blur of tears.
"I used our home equity as collateral to secure temporary custody and clear her estate's legal holds. I was going to explain everything to you today after I finalized the adoption papers in my briefcase. But the loan sharks and debt collectors showed up at our porch early this morning. They threatened to take the house and file a lawsuit against us both."
David remembered the strange black sedan he had seen parked down the street when he drove up to the house. Everything was starting to make terrifying sense. Sarah hadn't been trying to harm the baby on the balcony. She had been trapped on the upper deck while someone was inside the house, trying to force their way through the glass patio door.
David: She was trying to protect the child from someone on the deck!
A sudden knock on the front door shattered the silence of the hallway. David stood up instantly, stuffing the letter into his suit pocket. He walked over to the front entrance and pulled the door open, expecting to see Sarah returning for her belongings.
Instead, two tall men dressed in dark leather jackets stood on the porch. One of them held a thick stack of legal summonses, while the other carried a heavy camera.
Debt Collector: Are you David Miller? We have a court order to serve notice on this property immediately.
David: Get off my property right now before I call the police.
Debt Collector: Your wife signed away the deck rights and home equity three weeks ago, buddy. This house belongs to the bank now.
David took a step forward, his jaw set firm as he looked the collector straight in the eye.
