David stood tall in the doorway, blocking the two men from taking a single step inside his home. The wind blew through the open porch, rustling the lawn papers that still lay scattered across the grass outside.
David: My wife signed those papers under duress and without full power of attorney on this joint deed. Any agreement she made regarding this mortgage is legally void without my signature.
The lead collector scoffed, pulling a pen from his front pocket and tapping it against his clipboard.
Debt Collector: She owes over two hundred thousand dollars on her sister's estate settlement. You either pay up today, or we start foreclosure proceedings by noon.
David: I am a senior corporate attorney. I know every single property law in this state. If you step foot on my lawn again without a signed warrant from a county judge, I will file a harassment lawsuit that will ruin your firm.
The man with the camera stepped back, looking uneasy at David's sharp tone and confident legal terminology. The lead collector narrowed his eyes, realizing he wasn't dealing with a panicked homeowner anymore.
Debt Collector: You have forty-eight hours to clear this debt, counselor. After that, the bank takes the keys.
They turned around and walked briskly down the driveway, getting into their dark sedan and speeding away from the suburban neighborhood. David watched them leave, his brain calculating his next legal moves with rapid precision.
He ran back into the house and grabbed his smartphone from the oak table. He dialed Sarah's phone number immediately, holding the phone against his ear as it rang once, twice, three times.
Sarah: David? Please don't hang up on me.
David: Sarah, where are you right now?
Sarah: I'm sitting in my car near the park down the street. I couldn't drive any further because I was crying so hard.
David: I read the letter, Sarah. I read everything in the envelope you dropped in the hallway.
Silence hung on the line for a long moment. David heard her soft, trembling breath over the speaker.
Sarah: You know about Eleanor's baby?
David: I know everything now. Drive back to the house immediately. We are going to fight this together.
