FABLE

The Final Confrontation

The Five Year Old Girl Held a Key That Exposed Her Stepmother

Sarah: Mark, don't let her escape! She has the original bank documents in her car!

Father Mark: She’s not getting anywhere, Sarah. Look behind her.

At the top of the basement stairs, heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway above.

Sudden bright red and blue flashing lights illuminated the grand windows of the living room above.

Police Officer: DALLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT! STAND DOWN AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!

Vanessa froze at the top of the stairs, her hands shaking as two armed police officers pushed through the front doors.

Stepmother Vanessa: Who called the police?! How did they get here?!

Mark walked slowly up the stairs, holding Sarah’s hand while Lily followed safely behind them.

Father Mark: I pressed the silent security alarm under the living room mantel before I hit Carter.

Stepmother Vanessa: You... you set a trap for me!

Father Mark: You trapped my wife in a concrete room for two years for money, Vanessa. You thought you could trick a five-year-old child, but she was smarter than you'll ever be.

Police Officer: Vanessa Vance, you are under arrest for fraud, grand larceny, kidnapping, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent.

The officer grabbed Vanessa's wrists, snapping heavy stainless steel handcuffs over her wrists.

Stepmother Vanessa: Carter! Do something! Call the defense team!

Two more officers dragged Carter up from the basement in handcuffs, his jaw swollen and blood dripping from his lip.

Vanessa's Boyfriend Carter: I’m testifying against you, Vanessa! I’m not going to prison for your crazy plan!

Stepmother Vanessa: You coward! You were in on it from the beginning!

Police Officer: Save it for the courtroom, both of you. Walk.

The officers led Vanessa and Carter out the front doors, into the waiting police cruisers parked in the driveway.

Mark turned to look at Sarah, who was hugging Lily tightly in the center of the foyer.

Father Mark: I can't believe you're really here... I can't believe I almost lost you forever.

Sarah: I never lost hope, Mark. I knew our daughter would bring you to me.

Father Mark: We’re going to fix everything. The lawyers, the estate, the trust... it’s all yours again.

Sarah: I don't care about the estate, Mark. I just want my family back.
