A New Beginning

The Flash Drive Left on the Marble Aisle

As the police cruisers drove away with Brenda in the back seat, the mansion's main hall remained quiet. The wedding guests began slowly filing out toward the parking lot, leaving Mark standing near the altar holding his daughter.

Best Man Eric: What do you want to do with all these decorations and caterers, Mark?

Mark: Throw everything in the trash, Eric. Tear down the flowers, cancel the reception, and refund whatever we can. I want every trace of this day wiped clean.

Best Man Eric: What about the flash drive? The police took a digital copy, but do you want me to store the original in your office safe?

Mark: Put it in the safe. That tape gives Sarah the justice she was denied six months ago.

Little Lily: Daddy... is Mommy in the sky watching us?

Mark: Yes, sweetie. Mommy is looking down on us right now, and she is so proud of how brave you were today.

Little Lily: I missed Mommy so much.

Mark: I know, baby. I missed her too. But we don't have to live in the dark anymore. We know the truth now.

Mark walked out of the grand mansion doors with Lily wrapped securely in his arms. He looked up at the clear blue Texas sky and took a deep, long breath. For the first time in six months, the heavy weight in his chest felt lighter, replaced by a quiet sense of peace and closure.

He strapped Lily into her car seat in the back of his truck and climbed into the driver's seat. He turned off his phone, started the engine, and drove away from the mansion, leaving the painful memories of the altar behind him forever.
