Secrets Hidden in the Dark

The Girl Hidden Behind My Wife's Hallway Wall

Marcus: What the hell is inside this wall, Elena?

Elena: Marcus, please close it! You don't understand what you're doing!

Marcus: Get back! Lily, go to your room right now!

Lily: Daddy, don't hurt her! She's my friend!

I aimed the bright beam of my flashlight deep into the narrow crawlspace behind the hallway plaster. The air coming out of the gap smelled stale, dust-heavy, and cold. Shadows danced along the exposed wooden studs and insulation lining the narrow passage. As the light flickered across the back corner, something moved against the fiberglass rolls.

Marcus: Hey! Who is in there? Step out where I can see you!

A small, trembling figure huddled beneath a faded blue fleece blanket. Slowly, a little girl lowered the fabric from her face. She couldn't have been more than nine years old, with dirt smudged across her hollow cheeks and wide, terrified brown eyes looking directly into my beam. Beside her on a dirty piece of cardboard sat an old framed black-and-white photograph.

Girl in Wall: Daddy...?

Marcus: What... what did you just call me?

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the child in utter disbelief. She looked shockingly like Lily—the same almond-shaped eyes, the same curled dark hair, the same slight turn of her nose. My hands shook so violently that the beam of light danced wildly across the damp concrete floor.

Elena: Oh God... Marcus, please don't look at her like that...

Marcus: Elena, who is this child? Why is there a young girl living inside the crawlspace of our house?

Elena: I wanted to tell you! I was going to tell you so many times, Marcus!

Marcus: Tell me what? That you've been keeping a starvin' kid locked inside our walls like an animal?

I reached down and carefully picked up the dusty framed photograph sitting near the little girl's feet. I wiped the layer of grime off the glass with my thumb. The photograph showed Elena eight years ago, sitting in a hospital bed, smiling softly as she held two identical newborn baby girls wrapped in pink hospital blankets.

Marcus: Two babies... You gave birth to twins?

Elena: Yes... yes, Marcus, they were twins!

Marcus: You told me our second twin died during delivery! You swore to me in that hospital room that the doctor couldn't save her!

Elena: I had to say that! You don't know what happened back then!

Marcus: You lied to me for eight years? You made me grieve a dead daughter while she was alive?

Elena: Marcus, listen to me, the adoption agency—my family's debt—everything was collapsing!

Marcus: You kept our biological daughter hidden in a dark hole while Lily slept in a decorated bedroom ten feet away?

Elena: It wasn't like that! I was protecting her from my ex-husband's family and the private collectors who took my family estate!

Marcus: I don't give a damn about your family's estate or your ex-husband! This is a human child! This is our blood!

Girl in Wall: Mommy... is the man angry at me?

Marcus: No, sweetheart. No, baby, I am not angry at you. Come here. Give me your hand.

I reached deep into the narrow opening, extending my arm toward the frightened child. She hesitated, looking up at Elena with tears brimming in her large eyes before sliding her tiny, cold hand into mine. I pulled her out into the bright light of the hallway, holding her tiny frame against my chest as my heart hammered against my ribs.

Marcus: What is her name, Elena? What did you name my daughter?

Elena: Her name... her name is Maya.

Marcus: Maya... You kept Maya in a wall cage. I'm calling the police right now.

Elena: No! Marcus, if you call the cops, they'll lock me up and take both girls into child protective custody!

Marcus: You should be locked up! You belong in a cell for this!
