Elena: Marcus, please! You can't ruin our lives over a mistake I made years ago!
Marcus: A mistake? Locking a small child inside a wall for eight years to cover up federal fraud isn't a mistake, Elena! It's a crime!
Elena: I gave her food! I gave her toys! Lily kept her company every evening!
Marcus: You forced a nine-year-old child to keep your sick legal secret! You made Lily carry food plates under a door like she was feeding a stray animal!
Elena: If I go to prison, who is going to take care of the girls while you work your job?
Marcus: I will take care of my daughters! I will hire the best family custody attorney in Texas to make sure you never come near Maya or Lily ever again!
Elena's face twisted in pure desperation. She lunged forward, trying to grab the manila legal documents out of my hands, but I shoved her back against the hallway drywall. Her elbow slammed into the frame, cracking the plaster panel.
Elena: You think you're so innocent, Marcus? You lived in this house for five years and never even noticed the extra food disappearing from the kitchen!
Marcus: Because I trusted you! I trusted my wife when she told me she was taking extra meals to her late night shifts!
Elena: You were blind! You were too busy working your legal firm hours to pay attention to your own family!
Marcus: Do not try to flip this onto me! You are a monster, Elena!
The heavy bedroom door down the hall swung open slowly. Lily and Maya stood side-by-side in the doorway, holding hands tightly. Maya was wrapped in one of Lily's bright yellow oversized sweaters, her eyes red and tear-stained as she watched us fight.
Maya: Mommy... please stop screaming... I'm sorry I ate the food...
Marcus: Oh, baby... no, no, Maya, look at me. You didn't do anything wrong. Come here, sweetheart.
Elena: Maya, stay in the room! Don't listen to him!
Marcus: Don't you dare command her again! She is safe now!
I walked over to the two little girls and dropped to my knees, wrapping both of my arms around them. Maya buried her wet face into my shoulder, her small frame trembling violently as she held onto my shirt.
Marcus: I am your daddy, Maya. I am never going to let anyone put you in that dark wall ever again. I promise you on my life.
Maya: Can I sleep in a real bed with a pillow tonight, Daddy?
Marcus: You're going to sleep in a real bed every single night for the rest of your life, baby.
Behind me, the sound of heavy siren wails began to echo from the suburban street outside our house. Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the front window blinds, casting long blue shadows down the hallway floor. I looked up to see Elena standing near the front door, frozen in total defeat as heavy footsteps hurried up our concrete porch steps.
Marcus: The police are here, Elena. It's over.
