My eyes scanned the header of the official insurance document. The beneficiary name printed in bold black ink was Elena Vance. The insured person's name was listed as Maya Vance.
Marcus: You... you took out a million-dollar life insurance policy on Maya when she was born?
Elena: The insurance company paid out when the hospital declared her dead! I used the payout to pay off my ex-husband's syndicate debt!
