Elena: Marcus, drop the phone! You don't know the full legal mess behind this estate!
Marcus: I am dialing 911 right now, Elena. Do not come any closer to me or these girls.
Elena: If you call the authorities, my father's creditors will trace the trust fund! They'll take our house, our savings, and both children will be put into foster care!
Marcus: You think I care about money or a mortgage when my own daughter has been living on cardboard behind a wall?
Lily: Daddy, please don't yell at Mommy! She said Maya was hiding from bad men!
Marcus: Bad men? Lily, sweetie, take Maya into your bedroom and lock the door. Do it right now.
Maya clutched Lily's hand tightly, her small body shivering violently under her oversized t-shirt. The two identical sisters scurried down the corridor into Lily's bedroom, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind them. I turned on Elena, my eyes burning with rage and betrayal.
Marcus: Explain yourself. Every single word, Elena. Right now.
Elena: Eight years ago, before we got married, my late ex-husband left me with two million dollars in debt to a dangerous criminal syndicate operating out of Houston.
Marcus: You told me your ex-husband died in a car crash and left you clean!
Elena: He didn't leave me clean! He faked his death and used my name to co-sign high-risk loan shark contracts!
Marcus: What does that have to do with hiding Maya in the house?
Elena: When I gave birth to the twins, those men were standing outside the hospital floor! They threatened to sell one of my babies to satisfy the unpaid trust fund debt!
Marcus: So you faked a baby's death with a corrupt doctor?
Elena: I bribed the attending doctor with my last family inheritance check to file a fake death certificate for Maya!
Marcus: You declared our living baby dead on legal government documents?
Elena: It was the only way to make those monsters stop hunting her! On paper, Maya didn't exist anymore! She was safe!
Marcus: Safe? You call keeping a child hidden in a dark wall safe? Why didn't you put her in a real bed in a secret room?
Elena: Because six months ago, my ex-husband's former business partners moved into our neighborhood! I spotted their cars parked down our street, watching our house!
Marcus: So instead of coming to your husband—instead of letting me protect our family—you shoved a nine-year-old child inside a foundation crawlspace?
Elena: I was terrified, Marcus! I thought if anyone saw her face, they'd realize she was the twin they came to collect!
Marcus: You're insane, Elena. You've lost your mind to fear and lies.
Elena: I bought food for her every day! I kept her warm! I spent every hour trying to find a lawyer to clear the debt legal papers!
Marcus: You treated our blood daughter like a shameful crime. I can't even look at you right now.
Elena: Where are you going with that flashlight?
Marcus: I'm going back into that wall crawlspace. Because if you kept a child back there, I want to see what else you've been hiding from me in this house.
