The Latch Beneath The Marble

The Hidden Hatch Under The Marble Floor Revealed A Dark Secret

The bright morning sun flooded through the massive floor to ceiling windows of the Texas mansion.

David stood near the high foyer archway, looking through important trust fund documents for his young daughter Lily.

His second wife Victoria walked into the grand entryway, wearing a sharp black designer dress.

She carried a silver tray with morning coffee, but her eyes kept nervously sliding toward the silk foyer rug.

Little seven year old Lily was playing quietly nearby with her wooden toy blocks on the polished white marble floor.

The child accidentally knocked a toy block across the shiny floor, watching it slide toward the deep corner.

Lily crawled over to fetch her toy near the wall where the heavy framed artwork hung above the baseboard.

Her small fingers brushed against a tiny metal latch set directly into the floor seam beneath the carpet edge.

Victoria dropped the silver coffee tray with a loud clatter that echoed off the high walls.

Victoria: Lily, stop right there! Move away from that wall right now!

Lily: Look Mommy, there is a door in the floor!

Victoria: I told you to step away from there right this minute!

Victoria marched fast across the foyer, grabbing the small girl firmly by her arm to push her back.

Lily stumbled back onto the marble, her blue eyes filling up with instant tears from the sudden scare.

David immediately dropped his legal papers and rushed straight over to his trembling daughter.

David: Victoria! What is wrong with you? Why are you screaming at a little child?

Victoria: She was meddling with things she does not understand, David!

David: She is seven years old! You do not ever raise your voice like that at her!

David bent down on one knee, pulling young Lily safely into a warm hug against his chest.

The little girl pointed a shaking hand toward the wooden panel hidden near the edge of the rug.

Lily: Daddy, I heard a sound inside the floor!

David: What kind of sound, sweetheart?

Lily: A woman was whispering for help!

David froze in place, looking up at his wife with complete confusion written across his face.

Victoria shifted her weight back and forth, her hands shaking violently at her sides.

Victoria: She is just making up stories, David! Children have overactive imaginations all the time!

David: Why is there a lock on the floor under this decorative rug, Victoria?

Victoria: It is just an old wine cellar entrance from the original home construction!

David stared at the heavy iron latch that clearly had a brand new heavy keypad lock attached to it.

A faint scratch sound echoed beneath the heavy floorboards directly beneath where David was kneeling.

David grabbed the edge of the heavy rug and pulled it back to expose the entire hidden hatch door.

Victoria lunged forward, trying to block David from touching the heavy metal handle of the lock.

Victoria: Do not open that hatch! You have no idea what you are doing!

David: Get out of my way right now, Victoria!

David shoved past her and leaned his head down close to the cold metal surface of the cellar door.

A faint voice, raw and desperate, floated up through the narrow ventilation holes of the iron latch.
