The lock clicked heavily in the silence of the night, echoing through the empty hallway like thunder. Sarah lay awake on the king-sized bed, listening intently to the rhythmic sound of Mark’s heavy snoring beside her. She slid her legs out from under the thick quilt, taking care not to make a single sound. The air in the master bedroom felt icy cold against her bare arms as she crept toward the closet.
Sarah: He forgot to put his jacket inside the wall safe tonight. This is my only chance.
She reached into the dark wardrobe, her trembling fingers brushing against the heavy wool of Mark’s coat. Slowly, she slipped her hand into the inner breast pocket, feeling the crisp edges of folded paper inside. She pulled the document out, holding her breath as she stepped back into the adjoining master bathroom.
Sarah: What did you hide from me, Mark? What did you do at that hospital?
She unfolded the paper under the dim vanity light, her eyes scanning the official letterhead printed in black ink. It was an urgent blood type analysis report issued by Saint Jude Memorial Hospital late yesterday afternoon. The baby resting downstairs had blood type O negative, while both Sarah and Mark had blood type AB positive.
Sarah: O negative? That is genetically impossible for our biological child to carry.
She turned the page over, her thumb smudging the fresh ink near a small yellow sticky note attached below. Handwritten in Mark’s hasty scribble were the words: *Ensure the biological trust fund paperwork remains unchanged for now.* Below his note was a official receipt for a cash payment of fifty thousand dollars made to a lab technician.
Mark: What did I tell you about searching through my private personal belongings, Sarah?
Sarah gasped, dropping the papers onto the marble counter as Mark appeared in the doorway reflector mirror. His eyes were dark with fury, his hands clenched tightly into fists at his sides as he advanced.
Mark: You just could not leave well enough alone, could you? You always have to dig deeper.
Sarah: Whose child is downstairs in that crib, Mark? Tell me the truth right now!
Mark: She is our daughter as far as the law and the public are concerned.
Sarah: She is not my daughter! Where is the baby girl I gave birth to on Tuesday?
Mark: You need to lower your voice before you wake up the entire neighborhood, Sarah.
Sarah: I do not care about the neighbors! Did you swap my newborn child at the hospital?
Mark grabbed her wrists tightly, his fingers digging into her skin as he leaned in close to her face.
Mark: Listen to me very carefully, Sarah. My father’s multimillion-dollar estate demands a direct male heir or a child born under very specific legal conditions to trigger the family trust payout this year.
Sarah: You swapped our real child over money? Over a miserable inheritance payout from your father?
Mark: The family board was going to freeze my corporate shares if I failed to produce a valid heir.
Sarah: You are a monster, Mark! Where is my real baby girl? What did you do with her?
Mark: She is safe with a local surrogate mother who needed financial help to pay off her mortgage.
Sarah: You sold our daughter like a piece of property to secure your executive corporate board seat?
Mark: I bought us a future, Sarah! A future worth fifteen million dollars in liquid corporate assets!
Sarah shoved him away with all her strength, knocking a glass vase off the counter onto the floor.
Sarah: I am going to the police station right now to report every single thing you did!
Mark: You are not going anywhere, Sarah. Nobody will believe a word coming out of your hysterical mouth.
