Uncovering the Secret Deal

The Husband Swapped Her Baby at the Hospital

Rain lashed against the tall French windows of the home office as morning arrived across the quiet town. Sarah stood near the wooden desk, watching Mark speak on his encrypted satellite phone in low, furious whispers. Her mind raced with desperation as she plotted her next move while pretend-sorting through baby clothes nearby.

Mark: The paperwork must be finalized before noon today, Dr. Vance. No delay whatsoever.

Dr. Vance: The surrogate mother is asking for an additional payment before signing the custody papers.

Mark: Give her whatever amount she wants from the offshore account, but keep her quiet permanently.

Sarah picked up a small silver pen from the desk while Mark turned his back to look outside. She carefully slid a small USB drive off his laptop dock, tucking it into the heel of her shoe. On that drive were all the financial transfers and hospital staff bribe logs she needed to destroy Mark.

Sarah: Mark, the baby is crying upstairs. I need to go feed her right now.

Mark: Leave her in the crib. The private nanny will arrive in ten minutes to take over.

Sarah: What private nanny? We never hired a full-time nanny for our home!

Mark: I did. She will handle the baby while you prepare for your mandatory admission to the clinic.

Sarah’s blood ran cold as she stepped back toward the library door, her knuckles turning completely white.

Sarah: What clinic are you talking about, Mark? What have you arranged behind my back?

Mark: A private restful retreat upstate. You are experiencing severe post-partum psychosis, my dear wife.

Sarah: You are trying to lock me away in a mental institution so I cannot expose you!

Mark: The medical evaluation forms are already signed by Dr. Vance. Your word means absolutely nothing now.

A heavy knock rattled the front door downstairs, breaking the intense silence filling the large study room. Mark smiled coldly, adjusting his tie as he turned toward the staircase to welcome his invited guests.

Mark: That will be the medical transport team now. Do not make a scene, Sarah. It looks bad.

Sarah: You will never get away with this, Mark. God is watching everything you do today.

Mark: God does not control corporate trust funds, Sarah. Money controls everything in this cruel world.

Sarah sprinted toward the kitchen side door, her heart hammering wildly against her chest like a trapped bird. She unlatched the heavy deadbolt just as two large men in white medical scrubs entered the hallway. Rain drenched her face as she broke out into the storm, running blindly toward the driveway gates.

Mark: Catch her right now! Do not let her reach the main road or call anyone!

Sarah: Help me! Somebody please help me! My baby has been stolen!

She scrambled over the wet stone wall, slipping in the deep mud near the outer drainage ditch. A black sedan screeched to a sudden halt near the curb, its driver door opening wide into rain.

Detective Miller: Get inside the vehicle right now, ma'am! We received an anonymous tip about this property!

Sarah: Are you real police? Please tell me you are real police officers!

Detective Miller: State Police, ma'am. Show me what you have in your hands right now.

Sarah held up the small black USB drive, her breath coming out in ragged, sobbing gasps of hope.

Sarah: The entire crime is on this drive! My husband swapped my baby girl for money!
