Two hours later, Laura stood inside the courtroom of the Dallas County Courthouse, holding an emergency motion for evidence preservation. Opposite her stood two high-priced defense attorneys hired by Marcus Vance, looking supremely confident in their tailored suits.
Attorney Vance: Your Honor, this is a frivolous fishing expedition. My client is a grieving father whose family was traumatized by a reckless domestic worker. Demanding access to Mrs. Vance’s personal cellular device is an invasion of privacy.
Laura: Your Honor, the defendant specifically identified an independent third-party cloud device installed in the upper hallway. If the prosecution claims my client threw the child, the physical motion captured on that secondary wide-angle camera will settle the matter instantly.
Judge Miller: If there is independent cloud footage available, it is vital to this proceeding. I am granting an immediate subpoena for the cloud server logs associated with the nursery account.
Attorney Vance: Your Honor, the servers may take days to respond—
Laura: We don't need days. The service provider, CloudGuard, maintains a real-time emergency law enforcement portal. I have the legal compliance officer on standby via phone right now.
The judge raised an eyebrow and nodded toward the clerk. Within ten minutes, a secure digital file was transferred directly to the judge’s bench monitor. The courtroom fell into absolute silence as the video began to play on the large display screen facing the gallery.
The video timestamp showed 2:14 PM from the previous afternoon. On screen, Evelyn Vance was seen carrying the baby down the hallway toward the balcony. She walked up to the railing, set the infant down on a small decorative stool right beside the opening, and deliberately took three steps back into her bedroom, leaving the infant completely unattended near the drop.
Marcus: What... what is that?
Laura: Watch closely, Mr. Vance.
On the screen, the infant wriggled on the stool, losing her balance and slipping through the spindles. The camera captured the exact moment Margarethe, who was far below in the foyer polishing wood, heard the rustle, looked up, and bolted down the stairs like a lightning strike. The camera angle showed Evelyn standing in her bedroom doorway, watching the baby fall without making a single move to catch her.
Marcus: Evelyn... you were standing right there! You didn't even reach out!
The video audio played loudly through the courtroom speakers. Evelyn’s voice rang out clear and cold on the recording: "Finally... it’s done." Then, when she heard the slap of Margarethe catching the baby on the floor below, her face twisted in shock, and she began screaming: "Marcus! Help! She tried to kill our baby!"
Marcus: You monster! You tried to let our daughter die!
Evelyn: Marcus, wait! It’s not what it looks like! I was confused! I panicked!
Judge Miller: Silence in the courtroom! Bailiffs, secure the doors immediately!
Marcus turned on his wife, his face pale with horror and betrayal, realization dawning on him like a tidal wave.
