The marble floor of the luxury Dallas mansion felt ice-cold against Margarethe’s knees, but she barely noticed the stinging pain in her elbows. She was holding a tightly wrapped blanket against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Inside the blanket, a three-month-old baby girl whined softly, entirely unaware of how close she had just come to disaster.
Margarethe: Shh, shh, I’ve got you... you’re safe, baby girl, I’ve got you.
Tears blurred her vision as she stroked the child’s tiny forehead. Just seconds ago, she had been polishing the dark hardwood balustrade on the upper floor when she heard a rustle, followed by a sickening gasp. She had looked up just in time to see the infant slipping through the open spindle railing of the second-floor balcony, tumbling downward toward the hard foyer below. Without thinking, Margarethe had sprinted down the grand staircase, throwing her body across the polished floor like a baseball player sliding for home base, catching the bundle inches above the tile.
Evelyn: Oh my God! Marcus! Come quickly! She did it! She actually threw her!
Margarethe looked up, her breathing ragged, her eyes widening as she saw Evelyn standing at the top of the balcony. The wealthy mother’s face was flushed red, her fingers pointing down accusingly at the maid sitting on the floor.
Margarethe: What? No! Mrs. Vance, no! I caught her! She fell through the railing!
Heavy, furious footsteps echoed through the grand hallway. The front doors slammed open as Marcus Vance, a wealthy Dallas real estate developer, strode into the mansion, his face dark with rage.
Marcus: What the hell is going on here? Evelyn, why are you screaming?
Evelyn: Marcus, help us! The maid tried to kill our daughter! I saw her drop Lily over the balcony railing!
Margarethe: Mr. Vance, that’s not true! I swear to God that’s not true! I dove across the floor to save her!
Marcus: Shut up! Don't you dare lie to me in my own home!
Margarethe: Please, look at the baby! She’s unharmed! I broke her fall with my own arms!
Marcus: Hand my daughter over right now before I tear you apart!
Margarethe gently stood up, her legs trembling violently as she handed the baby to Marcus. The moment the infant was out of her arms, Marcus grabbed Margarethe roughly by the shoulder, shoving her backward toward the massive double doors.
Marcus: Get out of my house right now! I’m calling the police! You’re going to spend the rest of your life behind bars for attempted murder!
Margarethe: Mr. Vance, please! Check the security cameras! Check the foyer camera!
Marcus: Get out! Out!
The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind Margarethe, leaving her stranded on the grand driveway in the pouring rain, framed by the cold looming shadow of the estate. She had saved a life, but as the sound of police sirens hummed in the distance, she realized she was about to lose everything.
