The Secret in the Safe

The Maid He Forgot to Notice

Arthur: You're delusional, Clara. There are no documents. You left this family because you couldn't handle the lifestyle, and now you're trying to shake me down in front of my business partners.

Clara: I didn't leave. You told your father I ran away with a lover so he would pass the entire real estate empire directly to you instead of setting up the joint trust fund for Toby's care.

Judge Vance: Wait... Henry Sterling's original will specified a joint trust fund for Arthur's wife and child. Arthur claimed his wife deserted the family and relinquished all guardianship rights.

Clara: Look at me, Judge Vance. Does this look like a woman who relinquished her child?

Clara stepped forward, holding out her hands. The palm of her right hand bore a faint, curved scar—a mark from a broken tea cup from years ago that Judge Vance himself remembered seeing when she worked as a junior receptionist at the family firm.

Judge Vance: Good Lord... You really are Clara Hastings. The girl from the legal department who married Arthur in secret.

Arthur: Vance, don't listen to her! She's attempting to ruin a multi-million-dollar merger deal with the overseas investors! If this gets out, our stock value drops by morning!

Clara: That's all you ever cared about! Stock value, mansions, and maintaining this fake image of a devoted single father!

Toby: Daddy made Mommy wear the black uniform so people wouldn't know she was the lady in the painting upstairs!

The boy pointed up toward the grand staircase, where a massive oil painting of the Sterling family hung. Beside Arthur stood a soft-featured woman in a blue silk gown—a portrait painted eight years ago before Clara was forced into the shadows of the estate.

Victoria: My God... Look at the painting! It's her! It's the exact same face!

Evelyn: How could you keep your own wife as a maid in your house, Arthur? That is monster behavior!

Arthur: She agreed to it! She had no money, no lawyer, and no family! I gave her a roof over her head and let her be near the boy!

Clara: You forced me into it, Arthur! You threatened to use your high-priced attorneys to declare me an unfit mother and cut me off from seeing Toby forever if I didn't take the job as a live-in housekeeper!

Arthur: Because you were unfit! You had nothing to offer him!

Clara: I offered him love! I offered him a mother who actually knows his favorite bedtime story, who knows he's allergic to strawberries, and who wipes his tears when you lock him in his room for not acting like a grown businessman!

Toby squeezed Clara's hand tightly, burying his small face into her apron once more as the crowd broke out into furious chatter.

Judge Vance: Arthur Sterling, I am calling an emergency board meeting right now. We are locking down all access to the corporate accounts and family records pending a full legal investigation.

Arthur: You can't do that! I hold sixty percent of the voting shares!

Judge Vance: Not if those shares were fraudulently obtained through a forged spousal waiver, you don't. If Clara is the legal co-owner of the estate, your vote is invalid.
