David: Hand me your bag, Evelyn. Right now.
Evelyn: Get your hands off me! This is my personal property!
David: You lost your right to privacy the moment you threatened my son's life!
David pulled the heavy bag from Evelyn's grasp and unzipped it. He pulled out the white envelope, his eyes scanning the bold red lettering across the top.
David: What is this? Paternity test results?
Evelyn: Don't open that! David, please, just listen to me!
David: Why does this say confidential DNA analysis?
Maria slowly stood up from the cold floor, holding tiny Lucas against her neck. Her knees were bruised, but she didn't feel the pain. She watched David’s face turn from anger to utter confusion as he ripped open the seal.
Maria: Mr. Vance... should I take the baby upstairs to the nursery?
David: Stay right here, Maria. I want you to hear this too.
Evelyn: David, she’s just the maid! You don't share family legal matters with the help!
David: The 'help' just saved our child's life while you tried to destroy it! Now shut up!
David unfolded the heavy paper. His hands began to tremble, much like Maria's had moments ago. His eyes moved rapidly back and forth across the page.
David: Probability of paternity... zero percent?
Evelyn: It's a mistake! The lab mixed up the samples!
David: Zero percent? I am not Lucas's father?
Evelyn: David, I swear on my life, I've never been with anyone else!
David: Then explain this, Evelyn! Explain why a certified DNA lab says I have no biological connection to this boy!
Maria looked down at the baby in her arms. The infant opened his tiny dark eyes, staring up at her with a calm, trusting gaze that made her chest ache.
Maria: Sir... if I may speak...
David: What is it, Maria?
Maria: Mrs. Vance isn't the biological mother either.
Evelyn: What did you just say, you ungrateful little snitch?
Maria: I saw the hospital records in her dressing room last week while cleaning. She never gave birth to this baby.
David: What are you talking about? I was at the hospital! I waited outside the delivery room!
Maria: You were kept in the waiting room for four hours, sir. Look at the second page in that envelope.
David quickly flipped the page over, his breath catching in his throat as he read the secondary maternal marker test. His face drained of all color.
David: Mother probability... zero percent? Who does this baby belong to?
Evelyn: She's lying! She forged those papers to steal my place!
David: Where did this baby come from, Evelyn? Answer me before I call the police!
Evelyn backed up against the railing, her face twisted in rage and panic. She glared at Maria with absolute hatred.
Evelyn: If I can't have the inheritance, nobody will!
