The Shadow on the Balcony

The Maid Who Saved the Heir

David stood frozen near the front doorway, his eyes wide in absolute disbelief as he processed the scene before him. The grand marble foyer, usually silent and majestic, felt heavy with terror. Elena was sitting on the cold floor, cradling tiny baby Lily against her chest. The baby was crying hysterically, her tiny hands clutching Elena's maid uniform. Up on the high interior balcony, ten floors above, Victoria was leaning over the railing, her face pale but her lips curled in a cold, unrepentant sneer.

David: Elena... what did you just say? Tell me right now!

Elena: Sir, she pushed her! She dropped baby Lily over the railing! I had to sprint across the room to catch her before she hit the floor!

David: Victoria! Is this true?! Look at me!

Victoria: She's lying, David! The clumsy maid dropped the baby herself and is trying to blame me!

Elena: I was holding the laundry basket when I saw you on the upper floor! Look at the basket on the floor, sir! Look at the shattered vase!

David looked down at the floor near the entrance. The laundry basket was tossed aside, sheets scattered across the white marble floor, exactly where Elena had dropped them in her frantic dash. He looked back up at his wife, whose hands were still resting on the high wooden railing where she had been standing just moments ago.

David: You twisted monster... she's just a baby!

Victoria: She isn't mine! She takes everything away from me! Your wealth, your time, your estate, your entire life insurance policy!

David: She is my daughter! My late wife's child!

Victoria: And that's why I hate her! She reminds you of her every single second!

David's breathing turned ragged as anger welled up deep within his chest. He turned to Elena, his voice shaking violently as he took steps toward the grand staircase.

David: Elena, take Lily inside the master study. Lock the door and do not come out until I tell you to.

Elena: Please be careful, Mr. David. She has completely lost her mind.

David: She won't touch either of you ever again.

Elena pushed herself up from the cold floor, holding the crying child tightly in her arms. She hurried toward the side hallway, locking herself inside the study as instructed. Meanwhile, David turned toward the sweeping staircase. His knuckles turned white as he clenched his fists, taking the stairs three at a time in a blind, furious charge toward the tenth-floor balcony.

Victoria: Don't you dare come up here, David! You can't prove anything!

David: I don't need to prove anything! I know who you are now!

Victoria: You think the police will believe a low-wage maid over your lawful wife? I have lawyers! I have power in this city!

David: You have nothing!

David reached the top landing, his heavy footsteps echoing down the long, luxurious hallway. Victoria backed away from the balcony railing, her high heels clicking loudly against the polished wood. She tried to maintain her calm, arrogant composure, but as David stepped into the light of the hallway, the pure rage in his eyes made her take a step back in fear.

Victoria: Stay away from me, David! I'll call my attorney!

David: Call whoever you want. You're never stepping foot in this home again.

Victoria: I am the mistress of this estate! You signed the prenup agreements, but I still have rights to this house!

David: You gave up every single right the moment you tried to murder my child!

Victoria: It was an accident! She slipped!

David: I heard you scream at her from the floor below! You told her to get out of your life!

Victoria's eyes darted toward the private elevator at the end of the hall. She made a sudden dash toward it, hoping to escape to her private suite and lock the door, but David moved faster. He cut off her path, forcing her back against the wall near the high balcony view.
