FABLE

The Silent Guardian Duty

The Master Executor

Officer Mark Davis had served the local police department for over twelve years without a single blemish on his record. When he was assigned to provide security details for wealthy local estates, he expected routine shifts and quiet afternoons.

The Vance family estate sat high on a hill, overlooking the scenic valleys of northern Virginia. It was an impressive property featuring high ceilings, hardwood oak floors, white crown molding, and large hanging iron chandeliers.

A large framed USA flag was prominently displayed on the far wall of the main hall. Warm sunlight poured through the arched windows, illuminating dust motes floating quietly through the still air.

In the exact center of the vast hall stood an ornate antique astronomical armillary sphere mounted on a carved wooden pedestal. The polished bronze rings reflected the morning sun, serving as the hall's central artistic centerpiece.

Mark stood behind the pedestal, his eyes calmly scanning the room as he maintained his vigilant stance. He adjusted his leather duty belt, feeling the weight of his sidearm and radio.

He heard the heavy front doors unlock, followed by the deep hum of a quiet conversation outside. The main heir to the Vance estate was arriving to oversee the appraisal of the property assets.

Julian: Let us inspect the grounds and clear the path.

Julian Vance entered through the dark wooden double doors, wearing a tailored dark navy suit and dark shirt. His posture was commanding, carrying the confident air of a man accustomed to managing large corporate enterprises.

Mark: Good morning, Mr. Vance. The interior perimeter has been completely cleared.

Julian: Excellent. We must make sure every corner of this property is accounted for today.

Julian reached out his hand, gesturing firmly as he inspected the ceiling moldings and window latches. Mark watched him carefully, noticing how the wealthy businessman examined every fixture like an auditor reviewing financial ledger books.

The estate had been tied up in legal battles since the passing of old Arthur Vance six months prior. Multiple heirs were claiming rights to the estate, including distant cousins and corporate partners.

Julian: Is anyone else supposed to be on the premises this morning?

Mark: No, sir. I was instructed to allow entry only to you and the court appraiser.

Julian: Good. The valuation of the house and its historic contents must remain confidential.

Julian walked toward the center of the hall, stopping a few feet away from the heavy brass instrument. He looked at the police officer with a quiet, inquiring gaze.

Mark: I will step outside and check the exterior perimeter gates now.

Julian: Please do. Make sure the main gate remains locked to visitors.

Mark stepped out from behind the armillary sphere and walked toward the far interior doors. His heavy boot footsteps faded away as he moved across the polished oak floorboards.

He opened the heavy wooden door, stepping out into the hallway leading toward the outer courtyard. The latch shut with a heavy metallic click, leaving Julian alone in the vast, quiet hall.
