A loud crack of thunder echoed straight through the tall pine trees directly above their exposed heads.
Mark: A storm is coming, let's run!
Rain began pouring down instantly, soaking their clothes in seconds as they sprinted along the pathway.
Chloe: Where are we supposed to go in this heavy rain?
Mark: Straight ahead to the old wooden cabin shelter near the turn!
Their shoes splashed hard into deep water puddles forming fast along the slippery asphalt trail ahead.
The wind blew heavy drops sideways, making it nearly impossible to see more than a few feet.
Mark pulled Chloe toward a small wooden cabin nestled deep inside the thick patch of tall pines.
Mark: Inside, quickly, before the rain gets any worse!
They scrambled up the wooden steps and rushed inside the dark structure, slamming the door shut tight.
Heavy rain slammed furiously against the thin wooden roof while the storm raged wildly outside in darkness.
Chloe: I can barely see anything in this dark room.
Mark: Stand near the wall while I check the door latch securely.
Dim gray daylight leaked through tiny cracks between the rough wooden planks lining the cabin wall frame.
Chloe sat down against the wall, shivering uncontrollably from the cold rain soaking her white dress.
Mark sat right beside her and wrapped his warm light blue shirt around her trembling shoulders tightly.
Chloe: How long do you think this storm will last out there?
Mark: We have to wait until morning if the weather stays like this.
Chloe: But nobody knows we came out this far into the woods today.
Mark: Don't panic, Chloe, we are safe from the wind inside here.
The wind howled outside like a wild animal, tearing through the branches of the towering pine trees.
Loud crashing sounds echoed from the surrounding forest every time another large branch snapped and fell down.
Chloe: Did you hear that huge crashing sound just now?
Mark: That was probably a big tree branch falling nearby on the main road.
She pulled her knees close to her chest, listening intently to the relentless drumming on the roof.
Chloe: I left my phone inside the car at the main parking lot entrance.
Mark: Mine has no service out here anyway, so don't worry about it now.
They huddled together in the dim shelter, waiting silently as the storm raged through the long night.
