David leaned forward, sweat glistening on his forehead under the recessed ceiling lights.
David: I managed her portfolio. I increased her liquid net worth by twenty percent over five years. She couldn't cut me out.
Attorney Vance: Let us read the exact language of clause four, section B.
Vance cleared his throat, holding the document high so the court reporter beside him could record every syllable.
Attorney Vance: 'To my grandson David, whose greed eclipsed his humanity, I leave nothing from my financial reserves, stocks, or bond portfolios.'
David: This is fraudulent! This document is completely void!
Attorney Vance: 'Furthermore, I direct my legal team to immediately initiate formal embezzlement proceedings against David Sterling for the unauthorized transfer of three point two million dollars from the family commercial account.'
Victoria turned her head sharply, staring at her brother with wide, horrified eyes.
Victoria: You took three million dollars from the family business? David, where did that money go?!
David: It was an investment! A private equity venture that needed temporary bridge funding!
Maya: It went toward your luxury sports car collection and paying off private debts in Las Vegas, David.
David: How could you possibly know anything about my personal finances?!
Maya: Because Eleanor had me scan every bank statement that came to this house. She couldn't hold the heavy mail folders anymore, so I read every single line to her.
David: You snooped through my personal business! That is a gross invasion of privacy!
Maya: Those statements were addressed to Eleanor Sterling, David. It was her money that you were draining while she lay upstairs unable to walk.
Victoria: You fool! You ruined our entire inheritance because of your reckless gambling!
David: Don't act self-righteous, Victoria! You begged me for fifty thousand dollars last Christmas to cover your delinquent credit accounts!
Victoria: That was a family loan!
David: Paid with the very money you're now screaming about!
Attorney Vance: Silence! Both of you! There is one remaining section of the will that must be read immediately.
The entire room fell into a heavy, suffocating quiet as Vance turned the final page.
Attorney Vance: 'The entirety of my remaining estate, including the Sterling manor, the Hudson Valley acreage, the investment portfolios, and the family charitable foundation, valued at forty-two million dollars, is hereby transferred in full.'
David’s breath hitched in his throat as he stared at the attorney.
David: Transferred to whom? Some animal charity? A political committee?
Attorney Vance: 'Is transferred in full, unencumbered by any family trust liens, to my devoted friend and companion, Maya Lin.'
The silence that followed was so absolute that the hum of the air conditioner sounded like a jet engine.
David: Maya? The nurse? You gave forty million dollars to a girl who cleans bedsheets?!
Attorney Vance: That was Eleanor’s explicit, legally documented instruction.
Victoria: This is a criminal conspiracy! I will call the police right now! She coerced my mother!
Maya: I never asked Eleanor for a single dime, Victoria. Not once.
David: You knew! You stayed by her bedside playing the sweet innocent angel, knowing you were stealing our birthright!
Maya: I stayed by her bedside because when she had pneumonia last winter, both of you turned your phones off because you were vacationing in Aspen.
David: We had business obligations!
Maya: She almost died in my arms that night. She cried because not a single one of her children or grandchildren bothered to answer her call.
David stepped forward aggressively, slamming both hands down on the desk directly in front of Maya.
David: You will not walk out of this house with my family's legacy. Sign it back over to us, or your life becomes a living nightmare.
