Maya reached into her small canvas shoulder bag and pulled out a faded, pale blue envelope.
David stared at the paper in her hand, his breath coming in shallow, jagged gasps.
David: What is that? A secondary handwritten will? A codicil?
Maya: Open it yourself.
Maya placed the envelope on the polished wood between them.
David snatched it up instantly, ripping the seal open with frantic, careless fingers.
A single folded sheet of stationery slid out, along with a rusted brass house key.
David: What is this key? Is it to the Swiss deposit boxes? The penthouse safe?
Attorney Vance: Read the note, Mr. Sterling. Read it aloud so the record reflects its contents.
David’s hands shook violently as he unfolded the heavy paper. His voice cracked as he began reading Eleanor’s unmistakable handwriting.
David: 'David, this key unlocks the front door of the small two-bedroom bungalow your grandfather and I bought when we were married in 1952. The roof leaks, the floorboards creak, and there are no servants to pick up your coat.'
Victoria gasped, leaning over David's shoulder to read the text.
Victoria: The old working-class property in Ohio? The one near the rail yard?
David: 'You have lived off the hard work of generations you never respected. You squandered millions trying to impress strangers who do not care about your soul. If you wish to learn what it means to build a life, go live in that house and earn your daily bread.'
David crumpled the paper into a tight ball and hurled it against the wall.
David: She mocked me! From beyond the grave, the old woman mocked me!
Maya: She didn't mock you, David. She gave you a roof over your head, which is far more than you gave her during her final years.
Victoria: What about me?! Does the letter mention me at all?!
David: No! It’s just this worthless rusted key! Vance, you cannot allow this mockery of justice to proceed!
Attorney Vance: The surrogate court has already reviewed the probate filing. The decree is absolute, Mr. Sterling. The assets belong to Ms. Lin.
David: I will contest it on grounds of undue influence! I will hire every corporate lawyer in this city!
Attorney Vance: With what money, David? The firm representing you until this morning has already dropped you as a client due to unpaid retainers.
David staggered back as if struck by a physical blow.
David: How... how do you know about my legal retainers?
Attorney Vance: Because I am on the ethics committee of the state bar association. They notified me yesterday that your previous counsel withdrew representation.
Maya: You have nothing left, David. No money, no leverage, and no family left to bail you out.
Victoria: Maya, please... we were sisters in that house! I brought you herbal tea when you had that head cold three years ago!
Maya: You brought me cold tea because you wanted me to do your laundry while Eleanor was sleeping, Victoria.
Victoria: I am a mother! My children need their private tutors!
Maya: Eleanor already established a trust fund strictly for your children's educational tuition, managed by Attorney Vance. You cannot touch a single penny of it for yourself.
Victoria froze, her manipulation cut off completely at the knees.
Victoria: The children are covered... but I have nothing?
Attorney Vance: Exactly. Their future is secure, safe from your excessive spending habits.
David looked toward the open French doors leading to the lush, manicured lawn, his expression a mix of fury and complete despair.
David: This isn't over. You won't survive a single month managing this estate, Maya.
Maya: I survived seven years keeping your grandmother alive while you did everything to speed up her demise. Running this estate will be easy compared to dealing with your cruelty.
