Mark: How is she doing, Doctor?
Doctor Hayes: Clara is severely malnourished and dehydrated, but her vital signs are stabilizing. She was kept in remarkably controlled conditions.
Mark: Controlled conditions? What do you mean by that?
Doctor Hayes: Whoever held her was giving her basic rations, water, and specialized vitamins to keep her alive without letting her regain full physical strength.
Mark: It was calculated. Sarah kept her alive just long enough to maintain legal signatures on trust disbursements.
Mark sat by Clara’s hospital bed, holding his sister's thin, cold hand. The medical monitors beeped rhythmically in the quiet hospital room. Outer police guards stood outside the doorway, ensuring no one unauthorized could enter.
Clara: Mark... I thought you knew...
Mark: I swear to you, Clara, I had no idea. Sarah told me you moved to Europe after father passed away. She showed me letters signed in your handwriting.
Clara: She forced me to write those letters... every month... if I didn't write them, she wouldn't bring food...
Mark: I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry I didn't see the signs.
Clara: It wasn't just Sarah. Your mother-in-law... Helen... she came to the house too.
Mark: What? Sarah's mother was involved in this?
Clara: She has the original copy of our father's true will. The one that left the entire real estate firm and trust fund to me.
Mark felt a cold chill run down his spine. Helen, the quiet and elegant matriarch who managed the family’s accounting firm, had been orchestrating their personal finances for over a decade. Every mortgage paper, every tax filing, and every estate settlement had passed through Helen’s hands.
Mark: So Sarah wasn't the mastermind. She was just executing her mother's plan.
Clara: Helen wanted the real estate empire. She used Sarah to manipulate you into signing power-of-attorney documents.
Mark: That's why Sarah ran today. She didn't just flee from the police; she went to hide at Helen's estate in Fort Worth.
Mark stood up from the chair, his heart burning with a quiet, dangerous resolve. He pulled out his phone and dialed his state prosecutor friend, David, who had been following the case news closely since the afternoon arrest.
David: Mark, I just saw the news about Vance. The police department is in complete lockup. What's going on?
Mark: David, I need search warrants issued for Helen's private residence and her accounting firm in Fort Worth immediately.
David: Helen Montgomery? Mark, she's one of the most prominent financial figures in the county. We need concrete evidence for a warrant like that.
Mark: My sister is alive in Parkland Hospital. She just testified that Helen holds the forged real estate deeds and father's original stolen will. Get the judge on the phone right now!
David: If what you're saying is true, this is a multi-million dollar fraud and kidnapping ring. Stand by, Mark. I'm calling the state troopers.
Mark hung up the phone and looked down at his sister, whose eyes were filled with tears of relief and exhaustion.
Mark: Rest now, Clara. This ends tonight. I am going to bring every single one of them to justice.
