The grand dining room of the Dallas mansion was filled with the soft glow of crystal chandeliers and the clinking of expensive champagne glasses.
My stepmother, Evelyn, sat at the head of the long oak table, dressed in a sharp navy suit that cost more than most people earned in a month.
Beside me sat Mark, my fiancé, holding my hand gently under the linen tablecloth.
Evelyn: "I must say, Mark, your family's reputation in real estate precedes you. It is a pity Clara brings so little to this union."
Clara: "Evelyn, please. This is supposed to be a dinner for us to celebrate our engagement."
Evelyn: "I am only speaking the truth, dear. Ever since your father passed, I have carried the burden of this entire estate alone."
Mark: "Clara brings her intelligence, her kindness, and her heart, Mrs. Vance. That is worth far more than any property."
Evelyn set her crystal glass down with a sharp, heavy thud that made the surrounding guests fall silent.
Evelyn: "Kindness does not pay the property taxes on a twenty-acre estate, Mark."
Clara: "My father left this home to care for our family, Evelyn. You know that."
Evelyn: "Your father left me in charge because he knew you were far too weak to handle financial matters."
She sneered across the table, her eyes filled with cold contempt that had haunted me since I was twelve years old.
Mark: "That is not entirely accurate, Evelyn. In fact, we came here tonight with a few questions about the trust fund."
Evelyn froze, her smile instantly vanishing as her fingers tightened around her cloth napkin.
Evelyn: "What trust fund? There is no trust fund left. Your father died in debt, Clara, as I have told you a hundred times."
Clara: "Then why did dad's estate lawyer call Mark's firm yesterday?"
Evelyn stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the white marble floor, drawing the gaze of every relative in the room.
Evelyn: "You brought business negotiations to my dinner table? How dare you insult me in my own home!"
Mark: "It isn't your home, Evelyn. And tonight, everyone here is going to find out why."
Evelyn raised her hand and struck the table hard with her palm, her face flushed with sudden rage.
Evelyn: "Get out! Both of you, get out of my house right now before I call security!"
Mark calmly reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a thick, sealed Manila envelope, placing it directly in the center of the table.
